Well, howdy there! Let’s talk about them cropped Rottweiler ears, you know, the ones that stand up all pointy-like. Some folks like ’em, some don’t. Me? I just think they look kinda funny, like a dog tryin’ to be a bat or somethin’. But hey, to each their own, right?
What’s all this ear-croppin’ fuss about anyway?
Now, from what I hear, way back when, people started cuttin’ dogs’ ears for workin’ and huntin’. They figured it’d keep the dogs from gettin’ hurt in fights or when they were runnin’ through bushes and such. Thought it’d keep them ears from gettin’ ripped and torn, I reckon. They did the same thing with their tails too, chopped ’em right off.
- Workin’ Dogs: Like them Dobermans and Rottweilers, they say it was to keep ’em safe while workin’ or huntin’.
- Fightin’ Dogs: Guess they figured it’d give ’em less to grab onto.
But these days, lots of folks are scratchin’ their heads wonderin’ if it’s really necessary. Lots of vets and dog folks, they say it ain’t right, and it’s just causin’ the poor pups pain for no good reason. Especially with Rottweilers, ’cause them floppy ears, they ain’t just for show. They help ’em smell and track cattle, you know, do their job.
Rottweilers and Their Floppy Ears
Now, Rottweilers, they were bred for drivin’ cattle. And them big ol’ floppy ears? They were part of the package. They helped ’em hear and smell where them cows were wanderin’ off to. So, croppin’ their ears, it ain’t never been part of what makes a Rottweiler a Rottweiler. It’s just somethin’ some folks do ’cause they think it looks cool, I guess.
So, if you got a Rottweiler with cropped ears, how do you take care of ’em?
Well, I ain’t no expert, but I heard you gotta keep ’em clean. Otherwise, they can get all infected and nasty. You gotta clean ’em regular-like and make sure they’re dry. You don’t want no gunk buildin’ up in there. And if you see somethin’ that don’t look right, you best get that dog to the vet, pronto!
Here’s some things to keep in mind for them cropped ears:
- Keep ’em clean: Wipe ’em out regular-like with somethin’ the vet tells ya to use.
- Keep ’em dry: Don’t let no water sit in there.
- Watch for infection: If they look red, swollen, or smelly, get to the vet!
The Big Question: To Crop or Not to Crop?
That’s somethin’ you gotta decide for yourself. But like I said, most folks these days, they’re sayin’ it ain’t necessary, especially for Rottweilers. Their floppy ears work just fine, and croppin’ ’em just puts the dog through a lot of pain for nothin’. You know, it’s like gettin’ your own ears cut off just ’cause someone thinks it looks pretty. Makes ya think, don’t it?
And here’s the thing, sometimes when you crop them ears, they don’t stand up straight like you want ’em to. I heard tell of one ear foldin’ over on itself. Can you imagine? Then you gotta go back and get it fixed, more pain for the poor critter. Sounds like a whole heap of trouble if you ask me.
My Two Cents
If it was up to me, I’d leave them ears alone. God made them Rottweilers with floppy ears for a reason, and who are we to go messin’ with that? But hey, it’s your dog, and you gotta do what you think is best. Just make sure you do your research and talk to a vet before you go makin’ any decisions. And remember, a happy dog with floppy ears is better than a sad dog with pointy ones any day of the week. And if you do have a cropped Rottweiler, take good care of those ears!
One last thing, think real hard before you go choppin’ on a perfectly good puppy. Them floppy ears is part of their charm, like a baby with big, round cheeks. You wouldn’t go messin’ with that, would ya?
