Okay, so I’ve been wanting to do something cool for my furry friends for a while now. I’ve got two cats and a dog, and they’re all super energetic. I was thinking, “Why not make them some toys?” I mean, store-bought toys are fine, but I wanted to make something special, something from the heart, you know?
So, I started by brainstorming what kind of toys they’d like. My dog, Buddy, he’s a chewer. Anything he can get his teeth on, he’ll go to town. The cats, Mittens and Socks, they love anything that moves or has feathers. I decided to tackle a chew toy for Buddy and a feathery wand for the cats.

For Buddy’s chew toy, I grabbed an old t-shirt that I didn’t wear anymore. I cut it into long strips, making sure they were pretty thick. Then I tied all the strips together at one end with a really tight knot. I started braiding the strips, pulling them tight as I went. This was kind of like braiding hair, but a bit more chaotic. Once I got to the end, I tied another big knot. It ended up looking like a big, colorful rope.
- Cut old t-shirt into strips.
- Tie strips together at one end.
- Braid the strips tightly.
- Tie another knot at the other end.
Next up, the wand for Mittens and Socks. I found a wooden dowel in my garage – it was an old curtain rod, actually. Perfect size! I also had some colorful feathers that I picked up from a craft store a while back. I took a piece of string, about two feet long, and tied one end to the dowel. Then, I started gluing the feathers to the other end of the string. I made sure to overlap them a bit, creating a nice, fluffy bunch. I also added a little bell to the string, because what cat doesn’t love a good jingle?
- Find a wooden dowel.
- Tie string to the dowel.
- Glue feathers to the string.
- Add a bell.
The Test
Once everything was dry, it was time for the big reveal. I gave Buddy his new chew toy, and he went nuts! He started chewing and tugging on it right away. It was a hit! For the cats, I dangled the feather wand in front of them, and they immediately started batting at it. They were leaping and chasing it all over the place. It was so much fun to watch!
Honestly, it felt really good to make something for my pets with my own hands. And seeing them enjoy the toys so much? That was the best part. It wasn’t hard at all, and it was way cheaper than buying new toys. Plus, I got to use up some old stuff I had lying around. I’m definitely going to be making more toys in the future. Maybe next time I’ll try making a scratching post… or a little catnip mouse. The possibilities are endless!
