Okay, so I wanna talk about something I dove into recently: starting a Siamese cat cattery here in Florida. It’s been a journey, lemme tell ya!

The Spark: It all started ’cause I’ve always been a sucker for Siamese cats. Their personalities are just… chef’s kiss. And I noticed there weren’t a ton of reputable breeders around my area. So, the crazy thought popped into my head: “Why not me?”

The Research Deep Dive: First things first, I hit the books (well, the internet). Spent hours reading up on Siamese genetics, common health issues, responsible breeding practices, and the whole shebang. I devoured articles from the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) and other breed-specific organizations. Honestly, my head was spinning for a week.

Legal Stuff & Space: Then came the boring but crucial part: the legal stuff. Florida has its own set of regulations for animal breeders. Got in touch with the local authorities, figured out what licenses and permits I needed. That involved a lot of paperwork and phone calls, which I’m not a fan of, but hey, gotta do it right. Also, figured out the space situation. Realized my spare bedroom wasn’t gonna cut it. So, ended up converting part of the garage into a dedicated “cat area” – complete with proper ventilation, comfy bedding, and climbing structures. That was a weekend project from hell, but totally worth it.

Finding the Right Cats: This was probably the most important and nerve-wracking part. I didn’t want just any Siamese cats. I wanted healthy, well-tempered cats with good bloodlines. Contacted a few breeders I’d researched online, asked a million questions, and even visited a couple of catteries to see their cats in person. Finally, after months of searching, I found two gorgeous females and a handsome male that I felt were a good fit. They weren’t cheap, but I figured it was worth investing in quality from the start.

Health is Wealth: Before bringing the cats home, I took them to my vet for a full checkup. Got them vaccinated, dewormed, and tested for common feline diseases like FeLV and FIV. Quarantine was a must too. Kept them separate from my existing house cat for a few weeks just to make sure everyone was healthy and happy before introducing them.

The First Litter (Almost a Disaster!): Fast forward a few months, and one of my females got pregnant! I was so excited… and terrified. Read everything I could about feline pregnancy and kitten care. Set up a whelping box in a quiet corner of the cat area. Watched her like a hawk for any signs of trouble. The birth itself was… intense. Everything was going smoothly until the last kitten got stuck. Ended up rushing her to the emergency vet. Thankfully, they were able to deliver the kitten safely, but it was a close call. Lesson learned: Always be prepared for the unexpected!

Raising Kittens: Okay, raising tiny, helpless kittens is a full-time job. Bottle-feeding every few hours, keeping them warm and clean, socializing them… it’s exhausting but also incredibly rewarding. I started introducing them to different sights, sounds, and textures early on to help them become well-adjusted adults. Also, started handling them frequently so they’d be comfortable with human interaction.

Finding the Perfect Homes: Once the kittens were old enough, I started looking for potential owners. Didn’t just want to sell them to anyone who had the money. I wanted to find people who were responsible, loving, and committed to providing a good home for my kittens. Screened potential buyers carefully, asked lots of questions, and even did home visits to make sure they were a good fit. It was tough saying no to some people, but I had to do what was best for the kittens.

Repeat and Refine: Now I’m on my second litter, and things are going a lot smoother. I’ve learned so much from the first experience. I’m still learning every day, but I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished so far. It’s not easy running a cattery, but seeing those kittens go to loving homes makes it all worthwhile.

What I’ve Learned (So Far):

  • Do your research. Seriously, know your stuff.
  • Don’t cut corners. Invest in quality cats, proper health care, and a comfortable environment.
  • Be prepared for the unexpected. Things will go wrong. It’s how you handle them that matters.
  • Screen potential buyers carefully. It’s better to wait for the right home than to sell to the wrong person.
  • Love your cats. They’re not just a business. They’re family.

It’s been a wild ride, but man, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. If you’re thinking about starting a cattery, just be prepared to put in the work. It’s not for the faint of heart, but it can be incredibly rewarding.
