So, I decided to tackle the cat’s 3-in-1 vaccine myself this time. You know how it is, vet trips can be a bit of a to-do, especially for something that feels pretty straightforward. Figured I’d share how it all went down, from start to finish.
Getting Prepped
First things first, I had to get the vaccine. Made sure to order it from a place that ships it cold, that’s super important. It arrived in a little cooler box, ice packs and all. I stashed it straight in the fridge, just like the instructions said. Don’t want that stuff getting warm.

Then, the supplies. Here’s what I gathered up:
- The vaccine itself (it was one of those where you mix a liquid with a powder)
- A new, sterile syringe and needle – got the right size, small gauge for less ouch.
- An alcohol wipe, though some folks say skip it for vaccines, I had one handy.
- Treats. Lots of treats for bribery, before and after.
My cat, Whiskers, he’s usually pretty chill, but he has a sixth sense for when something unusual is about to happen. So, I tried to act all normal, you know? No sudden moves.
The Main Event
Alright, D-day. I took the vaccine out of the fridge about 20 minutes before, just to let it warm up a tiny bit, not to room temp, but just not ice-cold. Mixing it was easy enough, just followed the little pictures. Drew it up into the syringe, tapped out the air bubbles. That’s always the fiddly bit, getting those bubbles out.
Then, the moment of truth. I got Whiskers onto my lap. My partner was there for moral support and to help keep him steady if needed. I found a good spot, you know, the scruff of the neck where there’s plenty of loose skin. They say it doesn’t hurt them much there.
I took a breath, pinched up the skin to make a little tent, and pop, the needle went in. Pushed the plunger, nice and steady. Whiskers? He barely flinched! I was honestly surprised. Maybe a tiny meow, more confused than anything. Pulled the needle out, quick dab with the wipe (again, some say yay, some nay, I just did). And that was it!
Afterwards
Gave him a load of his favorite treats right away. He was more interested in those than anything else. I kept a close eye on him for the rest of the day, just to make sure he wasn’t feeling off or having any weird reactions. He was totally fine, maybe a little sleepier than usual that afternoon, but that was about it. No swelling at the injection site either, which was good.
Disposing of the needle was the next important step. Into a proper sharps container it went. Can’t just be tossing those in the regular trash, obviously.

So, yeah, that was my adventure with the 3-in-1 vaccine. Honestly, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be. Saved a bit of hassle, and Whiskers got his protection without the stress of a car ride and a vet waiting room. Would I do it again? Probably. As long as I feel confident and have everything prepped right, it seems manageable for these routine ones. Just gotta be careful and know your own cat, I reckon.
