Oh, my, those Welsh Corgi, them little dogs with the short legs, they sure are somethin’, ain’t they? Now, you got your Cardigan Welsh Corgi and your Pembroke Welsh Corgi, and let me tell ya, some folks, they get ’em mixed up. But they’re different, you see, different as chalk and cheese.
These corgi, they’re for herding, y’know. Keepin’ them cows in line, or sheep, or whatever you got. Barkin’ is their job, they do a lot of barkin’ to move animals. Loud little things, but good at what they do, good at what they do.

Now, that Cardigan, he’s the bigger one. Got a long tail, like a fox, kinda. And he’s a bit more, how you say, laid back. Not so jumpy, more chill. Takes things as they come, that Cardigan Welsh Corgi does. The Pembroke, now he’s got a little stub tail. Short little thing, barely there. And he’s more… friendly, I guess. Always happy to see ya, tail waggin’ that little stub. They just happy dogs.
- Cardigan Welsh Corgi: Big boy, long tail.
- Pembroke Welsh Corgi: Smaller, stub tail.
- Both: Short legs, big ears.
The Cardigan puppies, though. Oh, lordy. They’re loud, them little ones. Yippin’ and yappin’, runnin’ around like crazy. More so than the Pembroke puppies, I hear. The Pembroke pups, they’re a little more calm, not so noisy. The adult Cardigan, they are more quiet than Pembroke.
But both of ’em, they’re smart as a whip. Learn things real quick. And friendly, too. Love people, love kids. Make good pets, they do. Just gotta watch ’em around them little ones, though. They can be a bit nippy, bein’ herdin’ dogs and all. Gotta teach ’em not to nip at the ankles, y’know.
Some folks say the Cardigan, he’s a breed all his own. Not mixed with nothin’. Just pure Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Been around for ages, they have. Same with Pembroke, they are both very old dogs. They came from Wales.
One thing they both got is that corgi look. Short legs, long body, big ears. You see one, you know it’s a corgi. No mistakin’ that. They just got that look about ’em. And they’re both very cute, very adorable.
Now the Pembroke, he’s maybe a little smaller. Not by much, but you can tell if you put ’em side by side. And that tail, that’s the big difference. Cardigan, long tail. Pembroke, little stub. Easy to remember. They are both low to the ground, but that’s part of their charm.
But both of ’em, they shed somethin’ fierce. Hair everywhere. You gotta be ready for that. Brush ’em regular, or you’ll be swimmin’ in fur. That’s just part of havin’ a corgi, I reckon. It is their special fur.

And they like to eat. Oh, they love their food. Gotta watch their weight, though. They can get a little chunky if you let ’em. And with them short legs, that’s not good. Gotta keep ’em active, take ’em for walks. They are not very tall but they can walk very far.
So, if you’re thinkin’ about gettin’ a corgi, you gotta decide which one’s right for you. Cardigan or Pembroke. Big and chill, or small and friendly? Either way, you’re gettin’ a good dog. A loyal dog. A dog that’ll be your friend for life. They love their owners very much.
Just remember that barkin’. They bark a lot. Loud. But hey, they are herding dogs, it is their job. And they are cute when they bark. Just my two cents. And that hair. Lots of hair. But they’re worth it, them corgi. They sure are.
And remember to train them! They are smart, easy to train. So you can teach them not to bark at strangers, or not to chase cars. Or anything you want them to do or not do. They will learn it.
Both Cardigan and Pembroke are good dogs. I like them both. Maybe Pembroke is more popular these days. But Cardigan is just as good. Just different. They are not the same but they are both good. They are good corgi.
