Alright, let’s talk about them Rottweiler eyes. Them big ol’ dogs, they got some problems with their peepers, you know? Just like us old folks, things start goin’ downhill when you get on in years.

Eye Troubles, Big and Small
I heard tell some of this eye stuff runs in the family, like your grandma’s bad knees. They call it PRA, somethin’ like that. Means the dog’s eyes just ain’t workin’ right no more. Vision goes all blurry, like lookin’ through a greasy window. And then there’s them cataracts, makes the eyes all cloudy, can’t see nothin’. Poor things.
And it ain’t just that PRA. Heard there’s all sorts of other eye goobers they can get. Stuff like that…that thing…mac-u-lar de-gen-er-a-tion, yeah, that one. And sugar problems can mess with their eyes too, like when you eat too much candy and your teeth hurt, but way worse. And somethin’ called glock-oma, pressure buildin’ up in the eye, makes it hurt somethin’ fierce I bet. Then there’s them lazy eyes, or eyes pointin’ in different directions. Just a whole mess of trouble.
- Lookin’ for the Signs
Now, how do you know if your dog’s eyes are actin’ up? Well, they might start squintin’ a lot, like they’re lookin’ at the sun. Or they’ll be rubbin’ their eyes, tryin’ to make the hurt go away. Just like when you get somethin’ in your eye, you know? And sometimes, if the pain’s real bad, they might just get all droopy and tired, won’t even eat their dinner. And if you see red eyes, or waterin’ eyes, or some nasty goo comin’ out, that’s a sure sign somethin’ ain’t right. Gotta get ’em to the vet, pronto!
Why Them Rotties Get Eye Problems
Now, I ain’t no fancy doctor, but I heard tell it’s got somethin’ to do with the shape of their heads. Rottweilers, they got them squished-in faces, you know? Makes their eyes stick out a bit more. And that makes it easier for them to get poked or hurt. Heard they call it something with a big word, like a “brachycephalic skull”. Sounds like a mouthful to me. But basically, their eyes just ain’t as protected as some other dogs.

Then there’s those eye lid troubles, entropion and ectropion, one’s where the eyelids roll in, and the other one’s when they roll out. Neither one’s good, gotta get surgery to fix ’em.
Keepin’ Them Eyes Healthy
So, what can you do? Well, you gotta keep an eye on them, that’s for sure. Look at their eyes real good every day, see if anythin’ looks funny. And take ’em to the vet regular, for checkups. The vet, they know what to look for, they can catch problems early. And feed them good food, keep ’em healthy overall. That helps everything, not just the eyes. Just like how eatin’ your greens helps you see in the dark, or so they say.
If your Rottie starts havin’ eye problems, it’s important to work with your vet to figure out what’s goin’ on and how to treat it. There’s medicine sometimes, or surgery if it’s real bad. Just gotta do what’s best for your furry friend, you know? They depend on us to take care of ’em.
In Short
Rottweilers can get a lot of eye troubles, some run in the family, some just happen. Gotta watch out for squintin’, rubbin’, redness, waterin’ eyes, or anythin’ else that don’t look right. And take ’em to the vet, get ’em checked out. Them dogs, they’re part of the family, gotta take care of ’em, eyes and all.
