Okay, so today I wanna share my experience with figuring out if Maine Coon cats actually use a litter box. Sounds simple, right? Well, let me tell you, it was a journey.
It all started when I brought home Winston, my fluffy Maine Coon. He was adorable, but I was a first-time Maine Coon owner. I’d always had regular cats before, and they just kinda… knew what the litter box was for. Winston, on the other hand, seemed completely clueless.

First thing I did, of course, was set up a standard litter box. I figured, cat is a cat, right? Wrong! Winston just sniffed at it, maybe batted at the litter a bit, and then walked away. Days went by, and… nothing. I was starting to panic. Was he not using it because he didn’t like the location? The litter itself? I had no idea!
My first attempt was moving the litter box. I tried putting it in a quieter spot, thinking maybe he was scared by the noise. Nope. Still nothing. Then I tried a different corner, thinking maybe he just didn’t like the feng shui of the first spot. Still nada. I was starting to feel like I was playing a very frustrating game of hide-and-seek, except the prize was cat poop.
Next up, I switched litters. I was using a clumping clay litter, which had worked fine for my previous cats. But maybe Winston was a connoisseur? So I tried a different brand of clumping clay litter. Still nothing. Then I switched to a pine pellet litter, thinking maybe the texture would be more appealing. Nope. Then I tried a crystal litter. Still no luck! My apartment was starting to look like a litter box warehouse.
Then, I started researching Maine Coons specifically. Turns out, they’re pretty big cats! Maybe the regular-sized litter box just wasn’t comfortable for him? So I bought a giant, extra-large litter box. And guess what? Still nothing. I was officially defeated. I even considered those automatic cleaning ones, but I figured I’d exhausted all other options first before going high-tech.
But I wasn’t ready to give up! I started thinking about his behavior. He loved to dig in my potted plants! That gave me an idea. He liked to dig in soft things! So, I tried a different type of litter AGAIN. This time, I went with a very fine, sandy clumping litter. And… miracle of miracles… he used it! The next day! I almost cried with joy.
So, to answer the question: do Maine Coon cats use a litter box? Yes, they do! But sometimes you have to experiment a bit to find what works for them. In my case, it was finding a super fine, sandy litter that he loved to dig in.
- Move the litter box around to find the best spot.
- Try different types of litter. Don’t be afraid to experiment!
- Consider the size of the litter box. Maine Coons are big cats!
Hopefully, this helps anyone else struggling with a picky Maine Coon! Don’t give up, you’ll find the right litter for your fluffy friend eventually!
