Vallhund vs Corgi: What’s the Difference?

Swedish Vallhund vs Corgi: Comparing Temperament, History, and Traits

You know, these two dogs, the Swedish Vallhund and the Corgi, they both got short legs and long bodies. They sure do look alike, and folks always get ’em mixed up. But let me tell you, there’s more to it than just their looks. Now, I’m no dog expert, but I’ll tell you what I know from the bits and bobs I’ve heard from folks around here.

First off, you might notice that the Swedish Vallhund got a bit longer legs compared to the Corgi. I reckon they look a bit like a wolf in a way, while them Corgis, they’ve got a stockier, rounder body. And when it comes to temperament, well, it’s a little different too. Vallhunds, they ain’t always the most obedient dogs, but Corgis, oh, they sure like to please their owners. You tell ’em to do something, they’ll do it, no questions asked.

History of These Two Dogs

Now, let’s talk about where these dogs come from. The Swedish Vallhund is a breed with a long history, way back to the Vikings. They’ve been around for more than a thousand years! They were used on farms, helping herd cattle and all that. A hardworking breed, just like those farmers back then. But they didn’t even get recognized by the American Kennel Club till 2007! That’s pretty late for such an old breed, don’t you think?

The Corgis, on the other hand, are from Wales. They ain’t quite as old as the Vallhunds, but they’ve been around for a long time too. Both these dogs are what you’d call “working dogs,” meaning they were bred to help out with stuff, like herding animals. So if you’re lookin’ for a dog that’s got a good work ethic, either of these two will do you good.

Physical Differences: Vallhund vs Corgi

Let’s talk a little more about what these two breeds look like. As I said, the Swedish Vallhund has them longer legs, but their body’s a bit leaner too. Their coat’s usually a bit rough, and they got a fox-like look to ’em. Meanwhile, them Corgis got a shorter, stockier body, and their fur’s a little softer, like a teddy bear. The tail’s another thing that’s different. If you’re looking at a Cardigan Welsh Corgi, they got a long, bushy tail that looks like a fox’s. But the Pembroke Welsh Corgis, well, their tails get docked pretty close to their body.

And when it comes to size, you’ll find the Cardigan Corgis are a little bigger than the Pembrokes. A Cardigan might weigh up to 38 pounds, while a Pembroke won’t go over 30 pounds. That’s a good bit of difference, ain’t it?

Temperament Differences

Now, I gotta tell ya, these dogs might look similar, but they act a little different. The Vallhund’s a bit more independent. They’re smart dogs, real smart, but they ain’t as eager to please as them Corgis. The Corgis, bless their hearts, they love to be around people. They’ll do whatever you ask ‘em to do, just to make you happy. So if you’re looking for a dog that’s real obedient, maybe go with a Corgi. But if you like a dog that’s a little more stubborn, then a Vallhund might be your pick.

Which One is Right for You?

Now, if you’re sittin’ there wondering which one of these dogs is right for you, it all depends on what kind of dog you want. If you’re lookin’ for a hardworking dog, both of ‘em can help you out. The Vallhund might be a bit more self-reliant, though, while the Corgi’s gonna want to be by your side every second. And, if you want a dog that’s more social and ready to please, a Corgi’s probably the way to go.

But if you want a dog that’s a little tougher and maybe can handle a bit more independence, then the Vallhund’s a good choice too. They both got their good sides, and they both make excellent companions. But remember, no matter which one you pick, you’re gonna need to give ‘em plenty of love and attention. These dogs, they’re people-oriented, and they want to be part of the family. Don’t leave ‘em alone for too long, or they might get lonely.

  • Swedish Vallhunds: Longer legs, more independent, smarter but less eager to please.
  • Corgis: Stockier, shorter legs, loves to please, more social.
  • Both: Great herders, loyal, and intelligent. Both breeds make excellent pets with the right care.

In the end, it don’t matter which one you choose. They’re both good dogs, just gotta pick the one that fits your lifestyle better. You won’t regret it, that’s for sure!
