Okay, so I’ve been thinking about getting a Sphynx cat for a while now. You know, those hairless cats that look like little aliens? Yeah, those. I finally decided to take the plunge and started looking for breeders in Ohio, since that’s where I’m based.
First thing I did was hit up Google. Typed in “Sphynx cattery Ohio” and, boom, a bunch of results popped up. I started clicking through, checking out different breeders’ websites. I wanted to find someone who seemed legit, you know? Not some shady backyard breeder operation.

I learned a few things pretty quickly. One, these cats are not cheap! Two, it’s really important to find a breeder who cares about the health and well-being of their cats, not just making a quick buck. I saw the word “ethical” used a lot, so I definitely kept an eye out for that.
I narrowed it down to a few breeders that looked promising. One was called “StoneCroft Sphynx,” located in New Vienna. They had some good info on their site about how they raise their kittens and the kind of care they provide. I like that they pointed out that these cats are super social and shouldn’t be left alone for long periods. Good to know! If I go with one of these, I might have to consider getting two so they have a buddy. Maybe I could find a littermate. But I still need to think about whether I can take care of one or two furless kittens.
Another thing I noticed was that a lot of these breeders emphasized the importance of preserving the Sphynx breed. I guess that’s a big deal in the cat breeding world. I mean, it makes sense. You want to keep the breed healthy and strong, right?
My Next Steps
- Contact the breeders: I’m going to reach out to a few of the breeders I found and ask some more questions.
- Visit the catteries: If possible, I’d like to visit the catteries in person to see the kittens and meet the breeders.
- Think it over: This is a big decision, so I’m going to take my time and make sure I’m really ready for a Sphynx cat (or two!).
So yeah, that’s where I’m at right now. It’s been a bit of a learning process, but I’m excited about the possibility of adding a hairless little buddy to my family. I’ll keep you guys posted on how it goes!
