Okay, so I’ve always been a dog person, and German Shepherds? Love ’em. Big, majestic, and loyal. I finally got my own, a beautiful girl named Luna. For the first few weeks, she slept in her crate, no problem. She whined a little at first, but quickly got used to it.

Then, one particularly cold night, I felt bad. She looked so cozy all curled up, but I figured the floor had to be chilly. So, I caved. I lifted her onto my bed, figuring it would be a one-time thing. Famous last words, right?

Should Your German Shepherd Sleep in Your Bed? Things to Consider

The Experiment Begins

That first night was…interesting. Luna, bless her heart, seemed to think my entire bed was hers. She sprawled out, pushing me to the very edge. I barely slept. I woke up with a crick in my neck and a dog butt in my face. Seriously.

  • Night 1: Total bed hog. Minimal sleep for me.
  • Night 2: Slightly better. She still took up a lot of space, but I managed to reclaim a little territory.
  • Night 3: We started to find a rhythm. She’d curl up at the foot of the bed, then slowly creep closer throughout the night.

After a few days of this, I started to notice a few things. First, having her there was actually pretty comforting. Her soft fur and gentle breathing were surprisingly soothing. Second, she’s a furnace. Seriously, this dog generates some serious heat. Great for winter, maybe not so much for summer.

The Pros and Cons (Mostly Pros)

There were, and still are some downsides, I must admit. For example, the shedding is out of control. I have to vacuum my bed almost daily. Also, my allergies will slightly act up, even though I take medication for them. And, let’s be honest, sometimes I just want to sprawl out without worrying about kicking a sleeping dog.

But, I have to say, there are also a lot of benefits. The biggest one is just the feeling of companionship. Knowing she’s there makes me feel safe and secure. And waking up to her goofy, sleepy face every morning? Priceless.

So, yeah, my German Shepherd sleeps in my bed now. It wasn’t the plan, it’s not always perfect, but it’s our thing. And honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
