Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about these toy pet dogs, you know, the kind the kids are always yappin’ about. I ain’t got no fancy book learnin’, but I know a thing or two ’bout what makes a good toy, and what makes a doggone good dog, even if it ain’t real.

First off, these little toy dogs, they come in all shapes and sizes, just like real ones, I reckon. You got yer little bitty ones, like them dachshunds, I think they call ’em. Seen one in a picture show once, looked like a long sausage with legs, kinda funny lookin’, but the kids seemed to like it. And then you got yer bigger ones, I guess, but still small enough to carry around. My grandbaby, she’s got a whole mess of ’em, stuffed in a basket, sleeps with ’em too.
Now, I ain’t sure why they call ’em “toy” dogs. I mean, they don’t do nothin’ much, ‘cept sit there and look pretty. But the kids, they go crazy for ’em. They pretend they’re real, feed ’em pretend food, take ’em for pretend walks. It’s kinda sweet, I guess, seeing them little ones use their imaginations. Reminds me of when I was a young’un, we didn’t have no fancy toys, we played with rocks and sticks, but we had fun just the same.
You can find these toy dogs just about anywhere these days. Seen ’em at the big stores, and even at them little flea markets they have down by the town square. Some of ’em are real cheap, just a few dollars, and some of ’em, well, they cost more than a good pair of work boots, I tell ya! I guess it all depends on how fancy you want to get. Some of them got real fur, or somethin’ that feels like fur, and some got them big, glassy eyes that look right at ya. Kinda creepy if you ask me, but the kids love ’em.
- Cheap ones, they’re good for the little kids, you know, the ones that are gonna lose ’em under the couch or drag ’em through the mud.
- Fancy ones, well, them’s for the older kids, I reckon, or maybe even for the grown-ups who like to collect things.
And speaking of collectin’, I heard tell that some folks collect these toy dog figures. Like, they got whole rooms full of ’em, all lined up on shelves. Can you imagine? All that dustin’! But I guess it makes ’em happy, so who am I to judge? I collect stamps, myself, got a whole box full of ’em, even got some from foreign countries. Don’t know what they say, but they look pretty, with all them pictures and colors.
Now, if you’re lookin’ to buy one of these toy pet dogs, I got a bit of advice for ya. Don’t go spendin’ a fortune on somethin’ the kids are gonna play with for a week and then forget about. Get somethin’ sturdy, somethin’ that can take a beatin’. ‘Cause kids, they ain’t gentle, I tell ya. And make sure it’s safe, too. No little parts that can come off and choke ’em. That’s important. Safety first, that’s what my mama always said.
And if you’re lookin’ for a good deal, well, you gotta shop around. Check the sales, go to the thrift stores, even look online, I guess, if you know how to do that fancy computer stuff. Me, I stick to the stores, where I can see what I’m gettin’. Don’t trust them pictures on the internet, they can make anything look good.

Toys for dogs, that’s another thing. Not toys that look like dogs, but toys for real dogs to play with. Now, them’s important too. Keeps the dogs happy and out of trouble. My neighbor’s got a big ol’ hound dog, and he chews on everything if he ain’t got a toy to keep him busy. Chewed up her porch swing once, I tell ya! So, yeah, dog toys, they’re a good thing. You can find all sorts of them, balls, ropes, squeaky things. Just make sure they’re tough, ’cause dogs, they can tear through things pretty quick.
So, there you have it, my two cents on toy pet dogs and dog toys. Ain’t no expert, but I know what I know. And if you ask me, a good toy is a good toy, whether it’s for a kid or a dog, as long it brings a little bit of joy into the world. And that’s all that matters, I reckon.
