The Decision Grind
So now it was decision time. Go with the breeder pup I’d seen? Wait for a potential rescue match? The breeder option meant a puppy, which is a lot of work (housetraining, chewing, haha!), but you get to shape them from the start. The health history was clear, which was a big plus. The rescue option felt really good too, giving a dog a second chance, and you often get an adult dog whose personality is already known. Price was also a factor – breeder pups cost significantly more upfront than adoption fees, generally.
We talked it over as a family. We felt prepared for the puppy stage again, and we really connected with the breeder and how they raised their dogs. It just felt like the right fit for us this time around.
Found Him! (Almost…)
We decided to move forward with the breeder I visited. Put down a deposit and now we’re officially on the list for their upcoming litter! Didn’t pick out the specific pup yet, that’ll happen when they’re a bit older, but knowing it’s happening is exciting. Saw pictures of the dad dog too – handsome fella.
Now comes the preparation phase. Getting the crate ready, buying way too many chew toys probably, finding a vet, puppy-proofing the house again. It’s starting to feel real!

Finding a Lab in Maryland definitely took some legwork. It wasn’t just a quick click-and-buy thing, and I’m glad it wasn’t. Doing the research, asking questions, and being patient really paid off, I think. Whether you go breeder or rescue, taking your time to find a responsible source and the right dog for you is key.
