So, I got this idea in my head, right? Wanted a cat. But not just any cat off the street. I started seeing pictures of these Devon Rex cats. You know the ones? Big ears, wavy short fur, look kinda like little aliens. Weirdly cute.
I thought, okay, how do you even get one of these? Turns out, you gotta look for something called a ‘cattery’. Basically, people who breed specific types of cats. Never done that before. Usually, cats just kinda find me, you know?

Anyway, I did some searching online. Typed in ‘cattery devon rex’ and looked around my area. Found one that seemed decent, wasn’t too far away. I gave them a call. Felt kinda formal, setting up a time to visit. Weird.
Visiting the Place
So I drove out there. It wasn’t some big facility like I maybe imagined. It was just someone’s house. Like, a normal house, but very… cat-centric. You could tell these folks were serious about their Devons.
And the cats! Man, they were exactly like the pictures. Little bundles of energy, zipping around. Super friendly, too. One climbed right up my leg onto my shoulder almost instantly. Their fur felt different, kinda like suede. Very warm.
The breeder, the lady who ran the place, she was nice. But wow, she asked a lot of questions. Like, about my house, my job, if I had other pets, what I knew about the breed. Felt like I was applying for a job, not looking for a cat.
- She showed me the kitten’s parents.
- Talked about health checks, genetic stuff.
- Mentioned paperwork and contracts.
It was a lot. More involved than I thought. You don’t just walk in, pick one, and pay.
Made me think, though.
I remembered my buddy, Dave. He got a fancy-looking cat super cheap from some ad online a while back. Turned out the poor thing had all sorts of health problems. Cost him a fortune at the vet, and it was heartbreaking. The seller just vanished, wouldn’t answer calls.

Seeing how this cattery lady operated, all the questions and the health focus… it kinda made sense. Annoying, maybe, feeling like you’re being grilled. But I guess it shows they actually care where the kittens end up. They’re not just trying to make a quick buck like that person Dave dealt with.
So yeah. Left the place without a kitten that day. It’s a bigger decision than just liking the look of those big ears. Gotta be sure you’re ready for the commitment, and dealing with a proper cattery is part of that, I suppose. Still thinking about it. Those little alien cats are definitely something else.
