I’ve always been a cat person, you know? Dogs are great and all, but there’s just something about the independent, mysterious nature of cats that I find really appealing. So, a while back, I started thinking about getting another feline friend to keep my older cat, Mittens, company. I did some digging online, and that’s when I first came across the Russian Blue breed. Man, those pictures just sucked me right in – that striking blue-gray coat, those big, expressive eyes… I was smitten!
But I didn’t want to just jump in based on looks alone, so I started doing some more serious research. I learned that Russian Blues are known for being pretty chill, not too demanding, but still playful and affectionate once they warm up to you. That sounded perfect for my lifestyle. Plus, they’re supposed to be relatively low-maintenance in terms of grooming, which is a big plus. But the one that stuck out to me was one of the articles I read. It said that in the early 1980s, the breed’s founder, Cora Cobb, gifted her son a female black domestic short-hair cat. When this cat mated with a short-haired blue-furred male that looked much like a Russian Blue, it resulted in a litter of six kittens, one of which was a male with long blue-gray fur. I thought to myself that long-haired cats are just better! I just think they are really beautiful!

Now, here’s where things got a little tricky. Finding a reputable breeder wasn’t exactly a walk in the park. These guys aren’t as common as your everyday tabby, so I had to cast a pretty wide net. I spent weeks browsing websites, reading reviews, and reaching out to different breeders all over the country. Some of them seemed a little sketchy, to be honest, but eventually, I found a breeder who seemed legit. She was super knowledgeable about the breed, answered all my questions, and even sent me pictures and videos of her kittens. I noticed one that had a long coat and asked her about it. She told me that that particular kitten would grow up to have a beautiful long haired coat! I knew that I just had to have her! I even started preparing my place, you know, getting all the cat essentials – food, litter box, toys, the works.
Finally, the day came to pick up my new little buddy! I drove about five hours to the breeder’s place, and let me tell you, it was love at first sight. This little fluffball, with his big, curious eyes, just melted my heart. I named him “Ghost” on the spot – seemed fitting, right? The breeder gave me a whole rundown on how to take care of him, what to feed him, and all that jazz. I paid her the fee, which, yeah, it was a bit of an investment, let’s just say between $1,000 and $1,500, but totally worth it in my book. Then, I packed up Ghost and headed back home.
The first few days were a little rough, I won’t lie. Ghost was pretty shy and timid, hiding under the couch most of the time. But I gave him his space, talked to him in a soothing voice, and slowly but surely, he started to come out of his shell. It took some patience, but seeing him gradually get more comfortable and playful was so rewarding. And Mittens, my older cat? Well, she wasn’t exactly thrilled at first, but they eventually figured out their dynamic. Now they’re like two peas in a pod, chasing each other around the house and cuddling up together. It’s the cutest thing!
Living with Ghost has been an absolute joy. He’s got such a unique personality – he’s independent, sure, but he also loves to follow me around and curl up on my lap when I’m watching TV. And he’s a total goofball, always getting into some kind of mischief, whether it’s batting at his toys or trying to climb the curtains. And don’t even get me started on his coat – it’s so soft and luxurious, like a little cloud of blue-gray fur. Grooming him is actually pretty easy, just a quick brush a couple of times a week to keep him looking his best.
Here are some things I have learned about Ghost’s personality!
- Affectionate He follows me around the house like a little shadow! Always wants to see what I am doing.
- Friendly He is such a sweetheart! The first couple of days he was timid and shy, but once he got used to his surroundings he just blossomed!
- Playful He absolutely loves to play! He will often bring me his toys so that I can play with him!
- Quick learner He caught on really quick to the rules of the house! He learned where his litter box is and even learned a couple of tricks!
All in all, getting Ghost was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. He’s brought so much joy and laughter into my life, and he’s the perfect companion for both me and Mittens. If you’re thinking about getting a Russian Blue, especially a long-haired one, I say go for it! Just be prepared to do your research, find a good breeder, and be patient while your new furry friend settles in. Trust me, it’s totally worth it!
