Okay, so I’ve been thinking about getting a Rottweiler for a while now. They’re such majestic dogs, but I knew I needed to find a really good breeder, especially since I’m in Texas. It’s a big state, and I wanted to make sure I was getting a healthy, well-socialized pup.
My Breeder Hunt Begins
My first step? Google, of course! I started searching for “rottweiler breeders texas” and, man, did I get a lot of hits. It was overwhelming at first. I saw tons of websites, some looked fancy, some looked… well, not so fancy.

I spent a good few evenings just clicking through websites. I learned pretty quickly that a good breeder’s website should have lots of information. Not just about their available puppies, but about the parents, their health testing, and their breeding philosophy. I wanted to see clear pictures of the dogs, not just blurry snapshots.
Digging Deeper
After I narrowed it down to a few breeders that looked promising, I started doing some more serious research. I wanted to find reviews, or maybe even forum posts, where people talked about their experiences with these breeders. This part was a little tougher. It involved a lot of digging through online forums and trying to separate the real reviews from the, um, “enthusiastic” ones.
Then, I began calling and preparing a interview form.
- What is your breeding history?
- What’s your breeding aim?
- Do you offer any guarantee about my puppy’s health?
Making Contact
This was the nerve-wracking part! I started emailing and calling the breeders I was most interested in. I had a whole list of questions ready. I wanted to know about:
- Health Testing: What kind of health testing did they do on their dogs? Things like hip and elbow dysplasia are common in Rottweilers, so I wanted to make sure the parents were clear.
- Temperament: How did they describe the temperament of their dogs? I wanted a dog that was confident and friendly, not overly aggressive or shy.
- Socialization: How did they socialize their puppies? Early socialization is super important for Rottweilers, so I wanted to know what they did to expose the puppies to different people, sounds, and experiences.
- Contracts: Did they have a contract? What did it say about health guarantees and return policies?
Making a Decision (Fingers Crossed!)
After talking to several breeders, I finally found one that I felt really good about. They were knowledgeable, answered all my questions patiently, and seemed genuinely passionate about Rottweilers. They sent me tons of pictures and videos of the puppies and their parents. They even encouraged me to come visit and meet the dogs in person, I felt really satisfied about them.
So, that’s where I’m at now! I’ve put down a deposit on a puppy, and I’m super excited (and a little nervous) to bring him home in a few weeks. It’s been a long process, but I’m confident that I’ve done my homework and found a great breeder. Wish me luck!
