My old man used to say, “Eyes are the windows to the soul,” and ain’t that the truth? Now, I ain’t no fancy dog doctor, but I’ve seen enough critters in my time to know when somethin’ ain’t right, especially with them big Rottweilers. Seen a few with eye troubles, poor things.
What kind of eye problems do these dogs get, you ask? Well, lemme tell ya. They got these short, flat faces, see? Makes their eyes kinda bulge out. Think about it, if somethin’ pokes ya in the eye, it’s gonna hurt more if it’s stickin’ out, right?
- Scratches and stuff: They bump into things, get in fights, sticks poke ’em – all sorts of ways they can scratch their eyes.
- Cloudy eyes: Seen a few with cloudy eyes. Like lookin’ through a dirty window. Probably can’t see so good neither.
- Red and watery eyes: Sometimes they get all red and watery. Like they been cryin’ or somethin’.
Now, I heard tell of somethin’ called “PRA” or some such. Sounds fancy, but it basically means their eyes don’t work right over time. Starts slow, they say, then gets worse. Poor pups can’t see their food or their people. It’s a real shame.
Another thing, them ulcers. Like sores on their eyes. Ouch! Makes ’em squint and rub their eyes, just like us when we got somethin’ in our eye. Gotta get ’em to a vet quick for that, or they could go blind.
And what about them little Rottweiler pups? Well, they’re born with troubles, some of ’em. Weak stomachs and such. But their eyes are a problem too. Seems like it runs in the family. Just like some families got bad knees, these dogs got bad eyes.
Now, if you got a Rottweiler, you gotta keep a close eye on them eyes. Look for any changes. If they’re squintin’ or rubbin’ their eyes, take ’em to the doc right away. Don’t wait around. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
Can you stop these eye problems? Well, some you can’t. Just like you can’t stop gettin’ old. But you can take care of ’em. Keep their eyes clean, don’t let ’em get poked, and take ’em to the vet for checkups.
What if they get a hurt eye? Don’t mess around, get ’em to the vet. I heard tell of a dog bitin’ the vet tech ’cause he was scared. Poor fella. But you gotta do what you gotta do to help your dog. Even if it means they get a little upset.
You know, around the world, lots of folks have eye problems. Some can’t see far, some can’t see close. Some get cataracts. Just like dogs, I guess. It’s just part of life.
So, look after them Rottweilers. They’re good dogs. But they need a little extra care when it comes to their eyes. Don’t ignore the signs. Take care of ’em, and they’ll take care of you.
