Okay, so I saw this cool thing online the other day – a dog toy made from just a rope! I thought, “I can totally do that,” and decided to give it a shot. My dog, Max, is a super chewer, so I’m always looking for cheap and tough toys.
Getting Started
First, I grabbed some rope. I had some old cotton rope lying around in the garage, the kind you might use for, I don’t know, tying stuff up? It was pretty thick, which I figured was good for durability.

- Found the rope in the garage.
- It was about an inch thick, maybe a little less.
The Knot-Tying Process
Next, I needed to learn how to tie this thing. I’m no sailor, so knots aren’t exactly my specialty. I looked up a few “rope knot dog toy” tutorials. Some were super complicated, but I found one that used a simple overhand knot – basically the first part of tying your shoelaces. I Cut a piece that’s about 4ft.
I started by making a loop. Simple enough. Then, I just kept making overhand knots, one after the other, pulling them tight each time. I made sure to leave a little bit of rope at each end, so Max would have something to grab onto.
- Made a loop.
- Tied overhand knots repeatedly.
- Pulled each knot tight.
- Left some extra rope at the ends.
Finishing Up
It took me a few tries to get the knots nice and even, and to make the whole thing long enough. I ended up with a toy that was about a foot long, maybe a little longer. Once I was happy with it, I trimmed the ends a bit, just to make them neater.
The Result
Max loved it! He grabbed it right away and started chewing. It’s held up pretty well so far, even with his intense chewing. The cotton rope seems to be pretty strong, and the knots give it a nice texture for him to gnaw on. Best part? It cost me practically nothing, and I made it myself! Definitely a win in my book.
