Okay, here’s my blog post about tackling pet urine on carpets:
So, my furry friend, bless his little heart, had an “accident” on my favorite rug the other day. You know how it is – you turn your back for one second, and bam! Puddle city. I’ve dealt with this before, so I wasn’t totally freaking out, but I knew I had to act fast to avoid a lingering smell and a nasty stain.

First things first, I grabbed a bunch of paper towels and soaked up as much of the urine as I possibly could. I mean, really pressed down hard to get it all out. Don’t rub! Just blot, blot, blot. I went through a small mountain of paper towels, seriously.
My Cleaning Concoction
Next up, the cleaning solution. I’ve tried a few store-bought things, but honestly, I’ve had the best luck with a simple homemade mix. Here’s what I used:
- White vinegar – about a cup. This stuff is magic for neutralizing odors.
- Water – about a cup, to dilute the vinegar.
- Baking soda – a few good shakes. This helps absorb the smell and gives a little scrubbing power.
- A few drops of dish soap.
I mixed all that up in a spray bottle, gave it a good shake, and then sprayed the affected area liberally. I made sure to really saturate the carpet fibers.
Then I took an old brush and began to wipe the mixed liquid, making sure that my every movement could penetrate into the carpet. I really spent almost ten minutes, wiping and wiping.
After spraying, I let it sit for about 10-15 minutes. This gives the vinegar and baking soda time to do their thing.
Finally, I blotted the area again with fresh paper towels, getting up as much of the cleaning solution as possible. I then put a clean, dry towel over the spot and put some heavy books on top to help absorb any remaining moisture. Left that overnight.

The next morning, the carpet was dry, and – most importantly – the smell was GONE! The stain was also significantly faded. If there’s still a faint stain, I might repeat the process, or try a specialized enzyme cleaner. But honestly, this simple vinegar/baking soda mix works wonders most of the time!
It is so good, and I strongly suggest all of you pet-lover to keep the materials at home. It helps me a lot.
