So, the other day, I was sorting out stuff for my cat, Mittens. You know how it goes, just the usual routine. I reached for her dinner, one of those wet food packets she likes. Grabbed one, and then realised, oh crap, that was the last one. Not just the last packet in the cupboard, but the last one of that specific flavour. Salmon something-or-other in jelly. The only kind she reliably eats without turning her nose up.
Now, normally, running out isn’t a big deal, right? Just pop to the shop. But this week? Total chaos. My kitchen sink decided to spring a leak, not a huge one, but enough to make a mess and keep me busy. Had to shut the water off under the sink, empty the cupboard, towels everywhere. Plumber couldn’t come ’til Friday. So, my usual quick trip to the big supermarket? Didn’t happen. I’d completely forgotten about Mittens’s special salmon stash dwindling down to nothing.

Panic stations. Mittens gets really grumpy if her food isn’t exactly right. She won’t starve herself, not really, but she’ll make her displeasure known. Loudly. And pointedly ignore any other food you put down, while staring daggers at you. So, I quickly finished mopping up near the sink, threw on a coat, and dashed to the little corner shop. No luck. They only had the chicken one, which she treats like poison.
The Great Salmon Hunt
Next stop, the slightly bigger convenience store down the road. Scanned the shelves… nope. Beef, tuna, even some weird duck flavour. No salmon in jelly. Seriously? It’s usually everywhere. I started feeling a bit stressed. It sounds silly, stressing over a cat food packet, but with the sink mess and everything else, it felt like the final straw.
I ended up driving to the pet shop across town. Took ages, traffic was bad. Felt like I was on some epic quest for a foil packet. Found the aisle, scanned frantically… yes! They had it. But only the big multipack box. Cost a fortune compared to the singles, but what choice did I have? Bought the massive box, feeling slightly ridiculous but also relieved.
- Checked corner shop: Fail
- Checked convenience store: Fail
- Checked pet shop: Success! (but pricey)
Got home, sink still dripping into a bucket, but at least the catgeddon was averted. Opened a fresh salmon packet, plopped it in her bowl. Mittens strolled over, sniffed it suspiciously for a second (honestly, cat!), then started eating. Phew. Huge sigh of relief from me.
It’s funny how something so small, like a specific cat food packet, can throw your whole day off when other stuff is going wrong. Just glad I found it in the end. Now, about that sink…
