Okay, so, a few weeks ago, I decided I wanted to try and create a new dog breed. Yep, you heard that right. I’ve always been fascinated by dog breeding, and I thought, “Why not give it a shot?” So, I picked two breeds that I really like: the Corgi and the Fox Terrier. I mean, who wouldn’t love a Corgi Fox Terrier mix, right?

Getting Started

First things first, I had to find the dogs. I spent a good chunk of time searching for a healthy Pembroke Welsh Corgi and a Fox Terrier. It wasn’t easy, let me tell you. I wanted to make sure they were both in tip-top shape and had good family histories. Eventually, after a lot of looking, I found them – a lovely Corgi named Shorty and an energetic Fox Terrier named Wire. They were perfect!

The Waiting Game

Then came the hard part – waiting. It felt like forever, but finally, Wire got pregnant. The whole time, I was on edge, making sure she was comfortable and had everything she needed. I even started calling the mix a “Corrier,” just for fun.

Puppy Time!

Finally, the big day arrived, and Wire had a litter of the cutest puppies you’ve ever seen! They were a perfect mix of both parents. Some had the Corgi’s short legs and fluffy body, while others had the Fox Terrier’s wiry coat and longer legs. It was amazing to see how the traits combined.

Observations

  • Shedding: Oh boy, do these little guys shed. I knew from the start that both Corgis and Fox Terriers are known for shedding, so I was prepared, but wow. Lots of brushing is definitely needed.
  • Looks: One thing I noticed is that some of the puppies had that “otter head” shape, which I read is common in Border Terriers. And their heights varied quite a bit, from 11 to 16 inches at the shoulder, I guess.
  • Personality: They’re all super friendly and playful, just like both their parents. They seem to get along with everyone, even the kids. But, like with any dog, especially around little ones, I always supervise.

What’s Next?

This whole experience has been a real adventure. Seeing these little “Corriers” grow and develop their own personalities is just the best. I’m still not sure what I’ll do next, maybe I’ll try another mix someday. An “Auggie,” perhaps? A Corgi and Australian Shepherd mix? Who knows! The possibilities are endless, and it’s all pretty exciting. One thing is for sure – this has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done.
