Alright, let’s talk about these Maine Coon mix cats, you know, the big fluffy ones. I ain’t no fancy cat expert, but I’ve seen a few in my time, and they’re somethin’ else.

First off, you wanna know if your cat’s got some Maine Coon in it? Well, look at the critter! These Maine Coon mixes, they’re usually big fellas, long and kinda square-shaped in the body. Heard someone call it “rectangular body conformation” once, sounded mighty important. Anyway, they got big heads, like real big, and their muzzles, that’s the nose part, it’s kinda square too. And the paws! Holy moly, they’re huge, with fur stickin’ out all over, real tufty like. Ears are big too, standin’ straight up and pointy, sometimes with little hairs on the tips, looks like a lynx, you know, those wild cats.
The fur, that’s another giveaway. It’s shorter on the shoulders, but then it gets all long and fluffy around the neck, on the belly, and the back legs. They call it a “ruff” and “britches,” sounds funny, but that’s what it is. Makes ‘em look like they’re wearin’ fancy pants!
- Big, long body, kinda square-like
- Big square head and nose
- Big paws with lots of fur
- Big, pointy ears with tufts
- Long fur around the neck and belly
Now, where these cats come from, that’s a whole ‘nother story. Folks say all sorts of things. Some say they’re mixed with raccoons or bobcats, which sounds crazy to me, but who knows? Others say they came over on Viking ships, those fellas from way back when, and they’re related to some Norwegian forest cats. Sounds fancy, but I don’t put too much stock in it. All I know is they’re big and fluffy and like to eat!
And talkin’ about eatin’, these cats are like bottomless pits! They eat and eat and eat. You gotta make sure you feed ‘em enough, or they’ll be lookin’ at you with those big eyes, beggin’ for more. And they ain’t shy about it either. They’ll meow and chirp and yowl, all sorts of noises. Some folks say they’re “vocal,” I just say they’re loud! My neighbor had one, and that cat would yap your ear off if you let it. Always wanted somethin’, that one.
But even though they’re big and loud, they’re usually pretty gentle. Good with kids, most of ‘em. Lazy, too, I reckon. Like to lay around and sleep most of the day. But when they get goin’, they can be playful. Chase after toys and whatnot. Just gotta watch out for those big paws, they can knock things over if they ain’t careful.
So, if you’re thinkin’ about gettin’ a Maine Coon mix, just remember they’re big, they’re fluffy, they’re loud, and they eat a lot. But they’re also pretty darn lovable. Just be prepared to have a lot of cat hair around the house, that’s for sure! And make sure you got a good strong vacuum cleaner. You’ll need it!

And one more thing, they need space. You can’t keep a cat this size cooped up in a tiny apartment. They need room to roam and stretch their legs. And a big ol’ cat tree wouldn’t hurt either. Gives ‘em somethin’ to climb on and scratch at, instead of your furniture.
Overall, Maine Coon mixes are good cats. Not for everyone, mind you, but if you can handle the size and the fur and the noise, they make great companions. Just make sure you’re ready for a whole lotta cat!
Another thing I almost forgot to mention is that these cats can be a bit clumsy because of their size, especially when they’re kittens. They grow so fast that they sometimes haven’t quite figured out how to control all that body yet. So don’t be surprised if you see them stumbling around a bit or bumping into things. It’s all part of their charm, I guess.
One last thing, about their fur. It’s not just long, it’s also pretty thick, which means it can get matted if you don’t brush it regularly. So, if you’re not a fan of grooming, a Maine Coon mix might not be the best choice for you. Or, you could always take it to a groomer, but that can get expensive, let me tell you. These cats ain’t cheap to keep!
