Alright, so I’ve been getting a lot of questions about Maine Coon cats and allergies. I decided to do a little experiment myself, since I’ve always loved these fluffy giants but I’m also a bit sensitive to cat dander.
First off, I researched a ton about Maine Coons. I read that some people think they’re hypoallergenic, while others say that’s a total myth. Seemed like there was no clear answer, so I decided to see for myself.

I found a local breeder who was willing to let me spend some time with her cats. I explained my situation, and she was super understanding. She even had a separate room where I could interact with the cats one-on-one.
My Experiment
- I started by spending about 15 minutes just observing the cats from a distance. No sneezing yet!
- Then I got a bit closer and let one of the cats sniff my hand. Still good.
- Next, I carefully petted a beautiful Maine Coon for a few minutes. I made sure to wash my hands immediately afterward. My eyes started to get a little itchy, but nothing major.
- I repeated this process with a couple of other cats, increasing the time I spent with them. I even held one for a little bit!
Honestly, I was surprised. I definitely felt some mild allergy symptoms – a little bit of sneezing, some itchy eyes – but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected. It was way more manageable than my reactions to some other cat breeds.
Now, I’m not saying Maine Coons are completely hypoallergenic. Everyone’s allergies are different. But based on my little experiment, I think it’s possible for some people with mild cat allergies to live comfortably with a Maine Coon.
Of course, I took some precautions. I made sure to keep the cats out of my bedroom, I vacuumed regularly with a HEPA filter, and I invested in a good air purifier. I also started taking over-the-counter allergy meds, just in case. This test allowed me to know how to do further.
It’s been a few months now, and I’m happy to report that I’m doing great! I can finally enjoy the company of a Maine Coon without constantly sneezing my head off. It’s definitely taken some adjustments, but it’s been totally worth it.
So if you are interested in them, just do it! Maybe you can have one like me.
I hope this story is helpful to anyone who is thinking about getting a Maine Coon.
