So, I’ve always been a dog person, right? And I’ve had this dream of getting a big, fluffy, golden retriever. I finally decided to go for it. It was a bit of a process, but let me tell you, it was totally worth it.

First things first, I had to find one. I started looking around, checking out different breeders and rescue places. I stumbled upon this website called “Rescue A Golden” or something like that. It seemed like a good place to start, so I spent hours scrolling through profiles of adorable golden retrievers needing homes. They had this map thing that showed you dogs in each state, which was kinda cool. It helped me narrow down my search area.

Large Golden Retriever Guide (What to Know Before Getting One)

After a lot of searching and back-and-forth, I finally found a golden retriever mix that caught my eye. The idea of a mixed breed was actually pretty appealing. You get the best of both worlds, you know? The loyalty and friendliness of a golden retriever, plus whatever other traits the other breed brings to the table.

I contacted the rescue organization. They were super helpful and gave me all the information I needed about the dog. I learned about their history, temperament, and any special needs. It took some time, and I had to fill out a bunch of paperwork, but eventually, I was approved to adopt.

Picking Up My Furry Friend

The day I went to pick him up was exciting. I was nervous, but also super pumped. I drove to the rescue center, and there he was, this big, goofy, golden ball of fur. He was even more handsome in person! We spent some time playing and getting to know each other. I signed the final adoption papers, and just like that, he was mine.

Getting Him Settled In

Bringing him home was a whole new adventure. I had already bought all the essentials – a big comfy bed, food, toys, the whole nine yards. I decided to go with this “TLC Whole Life Puppy Food” because it had all this stuff about quality meats and vitamins. I wanted to make sure he was getting good nutrition, especially since he’s a larger breed and still growing. Males are supposed to be around 23-24 inches tall and he is a little bit shorter than that. Hopefully, good food will help him grow a little bit.

The first few weeks were a bit of a learning curve for both of us. I had to puppy-proof the house, start training, and figure out a routine. There were definitely some accidents and chewed-up items, but we got through it. He’s a smart boy, so he picked up on things pretty quickly.

Life with a Large Golden Retriever

  • Daily walks are a must: These guys have a lot of energy, so we go for long walks every day. It’s a good workout for both of us!
  • Grooming is a commitment: That beautiful golden coat needs regular brushing to keep it from getting matted and to reduce shedding.
  • They’re big cuddlers: Despite their size, they think they’re lap dogs. Be prepared for lots of snuggles and slobbery kisses.
  • They’re people pleasers: Golden retrievers are known for their friendly and eager-to-please nature. Training has been relatively easy because he’s so motivated to make me happy.

It’s been a few months now, and I can honestly say that getting my golden retriever mix was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. He brings so much joy and laughter into my life. He’s my best friend, my walking buddy, and my furry shadow. If you’re thinking about getting a large golden retriever, I say go for it! Just be prepared for lots of love, lots of fur, and lots of fun.
