Okay, so check it out, been messing around with dogs lately, trying to figure out what makes ’em tick, you know? This time, it was a Labrador Retriever and Terrier mix. Had a blast, learned a ton. Let me break it down for ya.
First off, I did my homework. Read a bunch online about these mixes. Apparently, they’re supposed to be super friendly ’cause Labs are all about making friends and Terriers are usually up for anything. Saw some stuff about needing to train ’em early ’cause Terriers can be kinda stubborn. Made sense, right?

So, I started by finding a local rescue with a Lab/Terrier mix. This little dude, we called him “Sparky” (yeah, I know, original). He was maybe six months old, total ball of energy. The rescue folks said he was friendly, but needed some work on the listening skills – classic Terrier, haha.
The first week was all about building trust. Lots of treats, gentle pets, and just hanging out in the same room. Didn’t push anything, just let him get used to me. Started with basic commands like “sit” and “stay.” He picked up “sit” pretty quick, especially if there was a treat involved. “Stay” was a whole different story. He’d stay for like, half a second, then bounce off to chase a leaf. Patience, right?
Next up was socialization. Took him to the dog park. Man, he LOVED that. He was all over the place, sniffing butts, chasing balls, the whole nine yards. He was great with the other dogs, big and small. No aggression at all, just pure, unadulterated puppy energy. We even ran into a few kids, and he was super gentle with them, too. Score!
The stubbornness thing? Yeah, that was real. Leash training was a pain. He’d pull like a sled dog. I tried everything: the gentle leader, the front-clip harness, even just stopping every time he pulled. Nothing worked perfectly, but the front-clip harness seemed to help the most. Still a work in progress, though.
Crate training was another challenge. He hated being in the crate at first. Lots of whining and barking. I started by feeding him his meals in the crate, then gradually increased the amount of time he spent in there. Gave him a Kong with peanut butter to keep him occupied. Eventually, he started to see the crate as a safe space, which was a huge win.
One thing I noticed was that he needed a TON of exercise. Like, a LOT. We went for long walks every day, played fetch in the park, and even started doing some agility training. That seemed to help a lot with the energy levels. A tired dog is a good dog, right?
The biggest thing I learned? Consistency is key. Gotta keep working on the training every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. And patience, man, you gotta have a ton of it. Terriers are gonna Terrier. Labs are gonna Lab. It’s a mix, so you get a little bit of both. It takes time.

So, yeah, that’s the story. Labrador Retriever and Terrier mix – energetic, friendly, and a little bit stubborn. But totally worth it. Highly recommend, just be prepared to put in the work.
- Lots of treats.
- Early socialization.
- Patience, patience, patience.
Seriously, if you’re thinking about getting one of these guys, do your research and be ready to commit. But trust me, the rewards are huge.
