Well, let me tell ya, this whole “weed and feed” thing for your yard, it ain’t as simple as they make it sound on them TV commercials. You gotta be careful, real careful, especially if you got critters runnin’ around, you know, cats, dogs, chickens even. They lick their paws, they eat grass, they get into everything. So, what you put on your yard ends up in them, and that can be trouble.
The problem with them weed and feed mixtures is that they’re strong stuff. They gotta kill them weeds, right? But that poison, whatever it is, it don’t just disappear. It sticks around. I heard tell it can stay nasty for days, even weeks, sometimes. So, your dog goes out there, chews on some grass, licks his paws…bam! He’s sick. And it ain’t just eatin’ it straight. They can get it on their fur, on their feet, and when they clean themselves, they swallow that poison.
Now, some folks say, “Oh, just keep ’em off the grass for a while.” But how long is a while? And how you gonna keep a dog off the grass? It’s like tellin’ a kid not to touch somethin’. First thing they do is touch it! So, you gotta think ahead.
You gotta be smart about what you put on your yard. If you got pets, you just can’t go grabbin’ any old bag of weed and feed. You gotta look for the stuff that says it’s safe for pets. They make it, you know. Pet-friendly fertilizer. Sounds fancy, but it just means it won’t poison your animals.
- Look for stuff that’s organic. You know, the kind made from corn or bone meal, things like that.
- Don’t use too much, whatever you use. More ain’t always better.
- Maybe try fertilizin’ less often. Your grass might not be the greenest on the block, but your pets will be safer.
They say that too much nitrogen in the fertilizer, the stuff that makes the grass grow, that can even burn the grass. And if it burns the grass, imagine what it can do to your dog’s tummy! And it ain’t just the fertilizer part, it’s the weed killer too. Them weed killers are powerful stuff. They gotta be to kill them weeds, I guess. But they can make your pets real sick. I heard stories… dogs gettin’ the shakes, throwin’ up, even dyin’. It ain’t worth it, just for a pretty lawn.
Now, some of them big companies, they say their stuff is safe. Like that Scotts Turf Builder. Some folks say it’s okay, but I don’t know. I’m always a bit suspicious of them big companies. They care more about sellin’ their product than they do about your dog, you know? You gotta read the labels, real careful. And if you ain’t sure, ask somebody who knows. Don’t just take the word of the fella at the store. He’s tryin’ to make a sale.

The best thing to do, if you ask me, is to go natural. You know, like folks used to do before all these fancy chemicals came along. Pull the weeds by hand. Use compost to feed your lawn. It’s more work, sure, but it’s safer. And your grass will be healthy, strong, and your pets will be happy and safe, runnin’ around without you worryin’ all the time.
And remember, if your pet does get into somethin’ they shouldn’t have, you gotta get ’em to the vet, right away. Don’t wait. Time is important when it comes to poison. Better safe than sorry, that’s what I always say. So, be careful with that weed and feed stuff. It’s powerful stuff, and it can hurt your furry friends if you ain’t careful.
