Okay, so the other day I was reading up on stuff for my dogs, you know, trying to keep them healthy and all. And I stumbled upon this whole soybean oil thing. I was like, “Soybean oil? Really? Is that even okay for dogs?”
My Little Experiment
So, I started digging. I mean, I really went down the rabbit hole. Forums, articles, vet websites – you name it, I read it. Turns out, soybean oil isn’t necessarily bad for dogs, but it’s not exactly the best thing either. Some folks were saying it’s a decent source of omega-6 fatty acids, which are good for their coat and skin. Others were all worried about allergies and the fact that it’s often highly processed.

I have two pups, a golden retriever named Max and a little terrier mix, Lucy. Max has always had a bit of dry skin, especially in the winter. Lucy, on the other hand, seems to be able to eat anything without a problem. So, I figured, why not try a little experiment?
The Test Run
First, I checked the ingredients on their current food. Nope, no soybean oil. Okay, good starting point. Then, I went to the store and found a small bottle of organic, cold-pressed soybean oil. I figured if I was going to do this, I’d do it with the “good” stuff, right?
I started small. Like, really small. I added just a tiny drizzle (maybe half a teaspoon) to Max’s food for a week. I watched him like a hawk. No changes. His skin was still a bit dry, but he wasn’t scratching any more than usual. No digestive issues either.
Next week added a tiny drizzle to Max’s food and Lucy’s food
Here’s how I tracked everything:
- Week 1: Tiny amount for Max only. No noticeable changes.
- Week 2: Tiny amount for Max and Lucy. Max’s coat seemed a little shinier. Lucy, well, she’s still Lucy.
- Week 3: Still a small amount, keeping it consistent. Max’s dry skin actually seemed to be improving! Less flaking. Lucy was still her usual, energetic self.
- Week 4: No More dry skin. Lucy was still her usual, energetic self.
The Verdict (So Far)
Honestly, I was surprised. I thought for sure Max might have some kind of reaction, but he didn’t. And his skin? Definitely better. Now, I’m not saying soybean oil is a miracle cure. And I’m definitely not a vet. But, in my little experiment, it seemed to help Max’s dry skin.
I’m still keeping the amount small, and I’m always watching for any signs of trouble. But for now, a little bit of soybean oil seems to be doing my dogs some good. Who knew?

Remember I am not a vet. I’m just sharing what work for me.
