Okay, let’s talk about making pet food with salmon. I tried it out, and it was quite the adventure.
First, I grabbed some fresh salmon from the store. The fillets looked good, and I was pumped to get started. I had read up a bit on this, so I knew salmon was supposed to be good for pets because of the omega-3s and protein. Sounded great to me!

Once I got home, I prepped the salmon. The main thing was to make sure it was cooked thoroughly. Raw fish can be risky, so I poached it in some water until it was flaky and definitely cooked through. I made absolutely sure there were no bones left. I picked through it like a hawk, double and triple-checking, because bones are a big no-no for pets.
- Boil water in pot
- Add the salmon and cook it
- Remove salmon meat from bone
Mixing it Up
After that, I mixed the cooked salmon with some other stuff I had prepared. Some cooked sweet potato, some peas, and a bit of rice, I thought this mix would make it a more balanced meal. I mashed it all together, aiming for a nice, even consistency. My dog was watching me the whole time, tail wagging like crazy. I think he knew something good was coming.
The first time I gave it to him, he gobbled it down so fast! He seemed to really love it. Over the next few days, I kept an eye on him. I wanted to make sure he was digesting it okay and all that. I even checked his poop – gotta make sure everything’s running smoothly, right? I noticed his coat started looking shinier, which was a nice bonus. It seemed like the omega-3s were doing their job.
Important Consideration
But I also remembered reading that too much salmon might not be good because of mercury. So, I decided to not make this an everyday thing. I figured it’s better to mix it up with other types of food, just to be safe. I don’t want to overdo it with any one thing. Moderation is key, even with the good stuff.
All in all, it was a pretty successful experiment. My dog got a tasty treat, and I felt good about giving him something healthy and homemade. It’s a bit of work, but seeing him enjoy it so much made it worth it. Plus, his coat really did get shinier, which is a nice perk. I think I’ll keep doing this from time to time, just as a special treat and to add some variety to his diet.
If you’re thinking about trying this, just make sure you cook that salmon well and keep an eye on your pet afterward. And remember, moderation is important. Other than that, it’s a fun little project, and your furry friend will probably thank you for it!
