My goodness, this here Mt. Garfield in New Hampshire, it’s a real doozy! I tell ya, folks are always talkin’ about it. Some say it’s a real tough climb, others say it ain’t so bad. Me? I just like to hear about it. These old bones ain’t climbin’ no mountains these days, but I sure do like a good story. Mt. Garfield NH, that’s what they call it.
Now, I heard from someone who heard from someone else that this Mt. Garfield trail is somethin’ else. They say it’s about two miles just one way. And you gotta go up, up, up! Like, 2,000 feet up! That’s a lot of up, if you ask me. They say the trails, these hiking trails, are steep. Real steep. Makes my knees hurt just thinkin’ about it. But they say the views from up there are somethin’ to behold. Makes you feel like you’re on top of the whole dang world.

They say it takes a good long while to get up and down that mountain. Several hours, they say. Gotta bring lots of water, and wear good shoes. Those rocks and things can be mighty slippery. You gotta be careful, you know? This ain’t no walk in the park, this here Mt. Garfield hike.
I heard tell it’s almost 12 miles to go all the way there and back. That’s a long way! Folks say it takes over 7 hours! You gotta be a real hiker to do that. Some folks like to camp and backpack, you know? They carry their houses on their backs. Young folks today like that sort of thing. And then there is that time of the day when no one is around. It must be very quiet.
- Lots of water
- Good shoes
- Watch your step
- Mt. Garfield NH
- Long hike
Now, some folks say there’s easier mountains to climb. Willard, Sugarloaf, Pemigewassett, those are some names I heard. They’re for folks who ain’t lookin’ for such a tough time. Maybe they are a little south of Mt Garfield. I don’t know. I don’t know those mountains so well. There is also Roberts and Percy/Morgan. There’s even one called West Rattlesnake, they say it’s real easy. Little kids can even do it. That one I might even try one of these days! They say you can get some real nice views without all that huffin’ and puffin’.
But this Mt. Garfield, it’s a different story. They say if you wanna climb it by yourself, you gotta go up the north side. That’s the Garfield Trail, they call it. And it goes up over 3,000 feet. That’s a whole lot of climbin’. Sounds mighty tirin’, if you ask me.
Once you get up there, they say it’s pretty flat. You don’t go up and down much anymore. Just walkin’ around on top of the mountain. Sounds kinda nice, but I bet it’s still a lot of work to get there in the first place! This Mt. Garfield hike sure ain’t for the faint of heart.
This whole Mt. Garfield NH thing, it’s a big deal around these parts. People are always talkin’ about it. Whether they’re gonna climb it, or they already did. They say there are a whole bunch of hiking trails out there. People love that sort of thing, being out in nature, you know? Seeing all the trees and the birds and the what-not. It is good to get some fresh air sometimes.
So, if you’re thinkin’ about climbin’ Mt. Garfield, you better be prepared. It ain’t no easy feat. You gotta be in good shape, and you gotta have the right gear. And you gotta be ready for a long day. But if you do it, they say it’s worth it. They say the views are somethin’ special. Somethin’ you’ll never forget. It might even be something like a spiritual experience. I don’t know about that though.

Me? I’ll just stick to hearin’ the stories. I’m happy to let the young folks do the climbin’. I’ll just sit here on my porch and listen to ’em tell all about it. That’s good enough for me. This old body ain’t made for climbin’ mountains no more. But I sure do love a good story about Mt. Garfield NH.
