Okay, so I’ve been getting a lot of questions about what I feed my dog, Max. He’s a golden retriever, super active, and honestly, a bottomless pit when it comes to food. I recently switched him to a lamb and rice diet, and I wanted to share my experience, and, like, how I even got there.
Figuring Out the Food Situation
So, first off, Max was having some, um, digestive issues. Let’s just say the backyard was not a pleasant place to be. He was also scratching a LOT. I felt terrible for the guy. I tried a bunch of different foods – chicken-based, beef-based, you name it. Nothing seemed to really click.

I talked to my vet, obviously. She suggested trying a limited ingredient diet, and lamb and rice kept popping up as a good option for dogs with sensitivities.
The Switch to Lamb and Rice
I did some digging, looked at a bunch of brands, read reviews, the whole nine yards. I finally settled on a brand that seemed pretty reputable. It had lamb as the first ingredient, and brown rice, which I figured was better than, like, white rice, I don’t know it seems healthier for dogs.
The Great Experiment Begins!
- Day 1: Max was suspicious. He sniffed the new food for a solid minute before giving it a tentative lick. He eventually ate it all, but he definitely wasn’t thrilled.
- Day 3: Okay, the backyard situation is starting to improve. Slightly less, uh, “messy.” Still scratching, though.
- Day 7: He’s eating the food without hesitation now! And, big news, the scratching seems to be a little less frequent. Still there, but better.
- Day 14: Two weeks in, and I’m seeing a real difference! The “mess” is pretty much back to normal, and he’s barely scratching at all. His coat also looks shinier, which is a nice bonus.
My Thoughts So Far
Honestly, I’m pretty impressed. It took a little while, but the lamb and rice diet seems to be working wonders for Max. He’s got more energy, he’s not constantly itching, and, well, let’s just say I’m spending less time cleaning up the backyard.
It’s not a miracle cure, and every dog is different, but if your pup is having similar issues, it might be worth checking out. I’m definitely sticking with it for now. I tried to observe and take notes on the whole thing, just like a real experiment. I’m really glad I did!
