Alright, let’s talk about this Basenji Labrador Retriever mix, or whatever them fancy folks call it, a Labrasenji, yeah? Sounds like a mouthful, don’t it?
Now, I ain’t no expert, but I’ve seen my share of dogs, ya know? This here Labrasenji, it’s a mix, see? One part’s a Basenji, that’s one of them quiet dogs, kinda like a cat, they say. Don’t bark much, but they make funny noises, kinda like yodeling. The other part’s a Labrador, a big, friendly fella, always waggin’ its tail, loves to fetch, ya know the type.

So, what happens when ya mix ’em up? Well, it’s like mixin’ up different kinds of beans in a pot, ya get somethin’ new. This Labrasenji, it could be big or small, or somewhere in between. Depends on which side it takes after more, I reckon. If it’s more like that Basenji, it might be smaller, maybe a bit more… particular, ya know? If it’s more Labrador, well, then ya got a bigger dog, more eager to please, always lickin’ ya and bringin’ ya the ball.
- Looks: Like I said, it’s a mixed bag. Some look like a small Lab, some look like a big Basenji, and some look like somethin’ else entirely. Colors? Could be black, yellow, chocolate, even that reddish color like a fox. Their ears, some stand up straight like a Basenji, some flop down like a Lab. It’s a surprise package, this dog.
Now, talkin’ about how they act, that’s another story. Labs are friendly, that’s for sure. Always happy to see ya, good with kids, the whole shebang. Basenjis, they’re a bit more… independent, let’s say. They like their own space, and they can be stubborn, like a mule, ya know? So, a Labrasenji, it could be anywhere in between. Might be the sweetest dog you ever met, might be a bit of a handful. It all depends.
- Trainin’: Now, trainin’ this mix, that could be tricky. Labs, they’re eager to please, so they’re usually pretty easy to train. But them Basenjis, they got a mind of their own. Ya gotta be patient, ya gotta be firm, and ya gotta be clever. They ain’t gonna do somethin’ just cause ya told ‘em to. Ya gotta make ‘em think it was their idea in the first place. So, if ya get a Labrasenji, be prepared for a bit of a challenge in the trainin’ department.
And what about health? Well, every dog has its problems, ya know? Labs, they can have trouble with their hips and joints, especially when they get old. Basenjis, they got their own set of worries, somethin’ about kidneys and eyes. So, a Labrasenji, it could get any of those problems, or maybe none at all. It’s a gamble, like plantin’ seeds, ya never know what you’re gonna get.
So, is a Basenji Labrador Retriever mix right for you? Well, that depends. Ya want a dog that’s always gonna be by your side, lickin’ your face and waggin’ its tail? Maybe a Labrasenji ain’t for you. But if ya want a dog that’s a bit different, a bit of a challenge, a bit of a mystery, then maybe this mix is just what you’re lookin’ for.
Just remember, a dog is a big responsibility. It ain’t a toy you can just put away when you’re tired of it. It needs food, water, shelter, exercise, and most importantly, it needs love. If you can give it all that, then a Labrasenji, or any dog for that matter, will be the best friend you ever had.
There’s other Basenji mixes too, I hear. Like them Basenji Chihuahuas, them tiny little things, or Basenji Boxers, those are probably some tough dogs. And Basenji Dalmatians? Bet those are some spotted pups. But this here Labrasenji, it’s got that Lab in it, ya know? That good ol’ family dog blood. That’s why I reckon they’re likely good family companions, long as ya treat ’em right and train ’em proper.
They say these Labrasenjis are fast runners too, on account of both their parents being pretty mobile dogs. So, if you got a big yard, that’s good, they’ll need space to run around and burn off energy. But even if ya don’t, long as ya take ’em for walks, they’ll be alright. Just gotta make sure they get enough exercise, or they’ll start chewin’ on your furniture, and nobody wants that.

So, there ya have it. My two cents on this Labrasenji dog. It’s a mixed breed, a gamble, a mystery, but it could also be the best doggone dog you ever owned. Just gotta be prepared for anything, and ya gotta be willing to put in the work. But ain’t that the truth with most things in life?
