Getting Started with My Short-Haired Maine Coon
So my big fluffball, Thor, started shedding like crazy last month. Seriously, tumbleweeds of fur rolling across my hardwood floors. I thought, “Okay, time for a proper grooming session.” Didn’t think it through much at first.
Gathering My Stuff (First Attempt Was a Mess)
I just grabbed my old comb and a slicker brush I had for my previous cat. Figured it might work. Yeah, no. The slicker brush barely touched Thor’s thick undercoat. He looked annoyed, I felt useless. Total waste of time. Needed a better plan.

Actually Buying the Right Tools This Time
Did some quick searching online – nothing fancy, just folks talking cat care. Realized short-haired Maine Coons still need specific tools because that undercoat is dense. Headed to the pet store and picked up:
- A wide-toothed metal comb: For gently tackling tangles near the skin without pulling.
- A rubber grooming mitt: Heard this helps grab loose fur and feels like a massage.
- High-quality cat shampoo & conditioner: Specific for shining coats. Didn’t have any ‘cos Thor isn’t a frequent bather.
- Treats. Loads of treats. Essential bribery material.
That’s it. Kept it simple.
The Grooming Session: Step-by-Step
Alright, time for action. Planned this for a lazy Sunday afternoon when Thor was already snoozing in a sunbeam. Found him on the couch.
Step 1: Making Friends (Again)
Sat down slowly next to him, not touching. Let him sniff the new comb. Gave him a treat. Let him sniff the rubber mitt. Another treat. Rubbed the mitt gently on my arm so he could see it. Third treat. Built that positive association.
Step 2: Starting Easy with the Mitt

Started petting him normally with my hand. Then, slid the grooming mitt on. Just kept “petting” him, but now with the mitt. It instantly grabbed SO much loose fur! It was crazy satisfying, like lint-rolling a couch. He actually leaned into it. Big win. Did this all over – back, sides, chest. Used gentle pressure.
Step 3: Bringing in the Comb
After the mitt got the top layer off, I switched to the wide-toothed comb. Important bit: Started away from the skin, just gently combing the surface fur first. Didn’t go digging straight down. Worked in small sections. Followed the direction his fur grows. Focused on spots he likes scratched – base of the tail (watched his tail, stopped if it twitched!), behind the ears, under his chin. Lots of treats offered continuously. Found a few tiny little tangles near his belly. Held the fur above the tangle so it didn’t pull his skin, then slowly worked the comb through from the ends upwards.
Step 4: The Surprise Bath (Not Planned!)
Then came the big surprise. He decided to jump off the couch straight into an open box I’d forgotten to put away… which had some dust bunnies in the bottom. Instant gray streaks. Sigh. Okay, Plan B: Bath time.

Ran lukewarm water in the sink – just a few inches. Added the cat shampoo. Lifted him in gently. Quickly wet his back and sides (avoided head/face!), lathered the shampoo, rinsed thoroughly. Used the conditioner, rinsed again super well. Wrapped him tight in a big towel and held him like a purrito for a few minutes to soak up most water.
Step 5: Drying & Final Brush
Kept him in the warm bathroom while he air-dried a bit. Once he was just damp, busted out the comb AGAIN. The bath loosened even more undercoat! Gently combed him out while he dried fully. The comb glided so much easier. Then gave one final, light pass with the rubber mitt. Shiny fur already starting to show!
What Actually Worked (The Verdict)
Turns out, the key for Thor’s short (but still thick!) coat is tackling it in layers:
- Rubber Mitt First: Gets mountains of loose topcoat easily, feels good for them.
- Wide-Toothed Comb Second: Crucial for getting deeper into that undercoat, especially after the mitt. Go easy!
- Conditioner is Magic: Even if you don’t plan a bath, that conditioner rinse made his fur crazy soft and helped it lie flat, reflecting light.
- Short & Sweet Sessions: Thor tapped out after about 20 mins. Next time, I’ll probably split it – mitt one day, comb the next.
- Treats are Non-Negotiable. Period.
Honestly? Totally worth the initial hassle and the unexpected bath adventure. His coat is so much softer now, sheds way less on my clothes, and just looks healthier. That shine is real! It’s not about making them perfectly fluffy like the long-hairs, it’s about keeping that short, dense coat healthy and smooth. Took patience and finding the right tools for HIS specific fur. They do look amazing now!
