So, I’d been thinking about getting a dog for a while, and those wrinkle dogs, puppies especially, just always caught my eye. You know, the ones that look like they’re wearing a baggy suit? I just found them incredibly charming. I figured, why not, let’s dive into the world of wrinkly pups.

My First Steps into the Wrinkle World

First thing I did was a bit of looking around. I didn’t just want any wrinkly dog; I wanted to understand what I was getting into. I spent a good few evenings just browsing, trying to figure out the different types. Some have a few distinguished wrinkles, others look like a delightful pile of laundry. It was quite the rabbit hole, I tell ya.

I learned pretty quick that those adorable folds weren’t just for show. They needed looking after. This wasn’t just a “feed it and walk it” kind of deal, though of course, that’s part of it too. The wrinkles themselves were a whole ‘nother chapter.

Bringing My Little Wrinkle Home

After much deliberation, I finally found the one. A little guy, more wrinkles than puppy, it seemed. Bringing him home was pure joy, mixed with a healthy dose of “okay, now the real work begins.” He was clumsy, full of puppy energy, and those folds would jiggle when he tried to run. It was hilarious and adorable all at once.

The first few days were about settling in. Finding the right food, getting the potty training routine started – you know, standard puppy stuff. But always, in the back of my mind, were those wrinkles.

The Nitty-Gritty: Wrinkle Care Practice

This is where my practice really kicked in. I’d read about it, but doing it is different. Here’s what my routine evolved into:

  • Daily Checks: Every single day, I made it a point to gently part his major wrinkles, especially around his face and any deep body folds. I was looking for any redness, gunk, or weird smells. Early detection is key, I figured.
  • Cleaning Time: At first, I tried a few things. Fancy wipes, special solutions. But what worked best for my little fella was a simple, soft, damp cloth. Not too wet, mind you. I’d gently wipe inside the folds. Sometimes, for tougher spots, I’d use a vet-approved gentle antiseptic wipe, but mostly just water.
  • Drying is Crucial: This was the golden rule I quickly learned. Moisture is the enemy in those dark, warm folds. After every clean, I’d take a separate, clean, dry soft cloth and meticulously dry between each wrinkle I’d cleaned. Sometimes, for really deep folds, I’d even use a bit of cornstarch-free puppy powder, very sparingly, just to help keep things super dry. A friend suggested it, and it seemed to help.
  • Post-Bath Protocol: Bath time was a whole operation. Getting him clean was one thing, but drying those wrinkles afterward? That took patience. Towel dry, then the cloth-drying routine again, making absolutely sure every nook and cranny was moisture-free.

It wasn’t always easy. Sometimes he’d squirm, especially when he was very young. But consistency, and lots of treats and praise, made it a manageable, even bonding, experience. He got used to it, and I got pretty efficient.

Beyond the Folds

Of course, there was more to him than just his skin. We worked on training, he loved his walks (once he figured out how his legs worked with all that skin), and he had the most endearing, slightly dopey personality. But even simple things, like finding a harness that fit comfortably without rubbing his neck wrinkles raw, took a bit of trial and error. I found that a wider, softer harness worked wonders.

Feeding time also had a wrinkle consideration! Sometimes food would get a bit trapped in his facial folds, so a quick wipe after meals became part of the routine too.

What I Learned

Living with a wrinkle dog puppy has been an education. It’s more hands-on than other dogs I’ve known, for sure. Patience is a big one. And consistency in their skincare is non-negotiable if you want a happy, healthy pup.

But the payoff? Absolutely worth it. There’s something incredibly special about these dogs. The extra care just becomes part of the rhythm of your life together. And honestly, those little grunts he makes when I’m cleaning his wrinkles? Melts my heart every time. It’s a unique journey, and I wouldn’t trade my wrinkly companion for anything.
