Well now, let’s talk about how much of that cat litter stuff you gotta use, ya know? It ain’t rocket science, but some folks just don’t get it. So, listen up.
First off, it depends on how many cats you got runnin’ around. One cat, well, that’s easy. You don’t need a whole mountain of the stuff. But if you got a whole clowder of ’em, like my neighbor Mrs. Higgins, well, then you gonna need a whole lot more.

Then there’s the size of them cats. A little bitty kitty don’t need as much as a big ol’ tomcat, that’s for sure. Big cat, big poop, big litter box, ya follow? It’s just common sense.
- One cat, not so much litter.
- Lots of cats, lots and lots of litter.
- Big cat, more litter.
- Little cat, less litter.
Now, the kind of litter you buy matters too. Some of that stuff soaks up more pee, so you don’t gotta use as much. Other stuff, it’s like pourin’ water in a sieve, just goes right through. You gotta use a whole heap of it just to keep the stink down. I tell ya, some of that cheap stuff ain’t worth a lick. You end up usin’ more of it, so you ain’t savin’ nothin’ at all.
And don’t forget about that litter box itself. If you got one of them tiny little pans, well, you ain’t gonna fit much litter in there, now are ya? But if you got one of them big ol’ tubs, like I got for my Mittens, well, then you gonna need more litter to fill it up. It’s important to give your cat enough room to do their business, ya know? They don’t wanna be steppin’ in their own mess.
Most folks say you need about two or three inches of litter in the box. That’s about this much, see?
(demonstrates with hands)
That gives them cats enough to dig around in and cover up their mess. Some cats, they like to dig more than others. My Mittens, she’s a digger, that one. So I always put in a little extra for her. If your cat’s a digger too, you might wanna go for three or four inches.
Now, how often you clean that box matters too. If you scoop out the poop and pee every day, like you’re supposed to, you won’t have to change the whole box as often. And you won’t have to use as much litter in the long run. But if you let that box sit there for a week, well, you gonna need a whole lotta litter to cover up the smell. And that’s just plain nasty.

Some folks say a bag of litter, the kind that weighs about seven pounds, that’ll last one cat about a week. So that’s like, what, twenty-eight pounds a month? Sounds about right to me. But like I said, it all depends. If you got more than one cat, or a big cat, or a cat that pees like a racehorse, you gonna need more.
Some of that fancy litter, it says it lasts longer. Like that Ever Clean stuff. They say a big bag can last one cat for two whole months! But I don’t know about that. Seems kinda fishy to me. I always just go by how it looks and smells. If it looks dirty and smells bad, it’s time to change it, no matter what the bag says.
And don’t go fillin’ that box all the way to the top, neither. That’s just wastin’ litter. And the cats, they’ll just kick it all over the place. Then you’ll have litter everywhere, and that’s a mess you don’t wanna deal with. Trust me on that one.
So, to sum it all up, there ain’t no magic number. You gotta use your common sense. Start with a couple of inches, see how it goes. If your cat’s happy and the smell ain’t killin’ ya, you’re probably doin’ alright. And if you got more than one cat, or a big cat, or a digger, just use a little more. It ain’t rocket science, folks. Just keep that box clean and your cat will be happy, and you’ll be happy too. And that’s all that matters, ain’t it?
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go check on Mittens and make sure she ain’t makin’ too much of a mess in her box. That cat, I tell ya, she keeps me on my toes.
