My dog, Max, he’s a good boy, but man, does he get itchy. I started noticing him scratching more than usual a while back. At first, I thought it was just regular dog stuff, you know? But it kept getting worse, and I felt bad for the little guy.
So, I decided to try and figure out how to help him out. I tried a couple of different things. I remembered someone saying something about oatmeal being good for skin, so I gave Max an oatmeal bath. I just ground up some regular oatmeal into a powder, mixed it with warm water, and gave him a good soak. It seemed to calm him down a bit, and he definitely scratched less afterward. The oatmeal bath kind of made a mess in the tub, but it was worth it to see Max a little more comfortable. I did this a few times, and it consistently helped, which was great.

- Grind the oatmeal to make a powder
- Mix it with warm water
- Put your dog into the tub and have a bath
Then, I thought about what else might soothe his skin. I’ve used aloe vera on my own sunburns before, and it’s always been helpful. I found a little pure aloe vera at home and tried putting a bit on the spots where Max was scratching the most. I made sure it was the kind without any added stuff that could be bad for dogs. Max didn’t love me putting it on him, but he seemed to feel better afterward. It wasn’t a miracle cure, but it did seem to take the edge off his itching.
I also heard that coconut oil could be good for dogs’ skin. I did a little research to be sure and found out that a lot of people use it for their pets. I tried a little bit of coconut oil. I just rubbed a small amount onto the areas where he was itchy. Max actually seemed to like this one, maybe because it felt like a massage, haha. And it did seem to help! His coat even looked a little shinier afterward, so that was a nice bonus.I also tried using Apple Cider Vinegar Water Spray, but it didn’t work. The smell was too strong. Then, I used Baking Soda. It worked a little bit, but I didn’t use it for a long time because I was worried it would make my dog’s skin too dry. I also saw that someone said that Calendula was a good thing, but I didn’t know what it was, so I didn’t try it.
Another thing I realized was important was just keeping Max and his stuff clean. I started washing his bedding more often and making sure his toys were clean, too. I figured that if there was less dirt and stuff around, he might not be as itchy. It seemed logical to me, and it did seem to make a difference, along with the other things I was trying.
I also made sure Max was drinking enough water. I read somewhere that staying hydrated is good for skin health, for both dogs and people. So, I made sure his water bowl was always full, and I encouraged him to drink more. I don’t know if it directly helped with the itching, but it’s good for him overall, so why not?
Now, Max is doing a lot better. He still itches sometimes, but it’s nowhere near as bad as it used to be. I’m glad I tried these things out. It was a bit of trial and error, but seeing Max more comfortable makes it all worth it. I just wanted to share my experience in case it helps other dog owners out there. It’s tough seeing your furry friend feeling bad, so hopefully, these tips can give some relief.
Final Thoughts
Please keep in mind that if your dog is itching a lot, it’s always a good idea to check with your vet. They can make sure there’s nothing serious going on. But in the meantime, these simple things might just make your dog a bit happier and a lot less itchy!
