So, there’s always been this thing about orange cats in comics, right? And the two big names that pop up are Heathcliff and Garfield. I’ve been thinking about these two a lot lately. I mean, I grew up reading both of them, but I always felt this weird, unspoken rivalry between them. Kind of like they were competing to be the top orange cat in the comic world, you know?
I remember back in the day, I saw Heathcliff as this tough, street-smart cat who always came out on top. He was like the cool cat on the block. Garfield, on the other hand, was more of a lazy, sarcastic dude who loved lasagna. I used to watch the two series of Heathcliff cartoons with Mel Blanc voicing, and it was good stuff. Both of them are really attractive to me.

Recently, I got this itch to compare them more directly. Like, putting them head-to-head. And what better way to do that than by looking at specific episodes of their shows? I found these two episodes, one from each show, that both featured these jerky female cats, Lorelei and Tammy. Figured it was a good starting point. I spent like whole afternoon to look up their episodes, and I found them finally.
I rewatched both episodes, taking notes and really paying attention to the details. The animation styles, the humor, the characters’ personalities, the whole shebang. I was like a detective, but instead of solving crimes, I was trying to figure out which orange cat was superior, haha. It was actually a lot of fun, diving back into these old shows. It brought back a lot of memories, you know?
Here’s what I realized: Heathcliff is kind of older. Turns out, Heathcliff’s been around longer. Like, five years longer! That’s like a whole lifetime in cat years. So, when Garfield came along, it seemed like everyone kinda forgot about Heathcliff. Now everyone is just talking about Garfield. It made me feel a little sad for Heathcliff, to be honest. He was the OG orange cat, and suddenly he was playing second fiddle to this newcomer.
- Heathcliff came out in 1973, and Garfield showed up later in 1978.
- Both cats had shows, but Garfield’s became way more popular.
- They both had episodes with similar characters, like those mean female cats.
I wrote down all my observations, comparing and contrasting the two cats. After all that digging and watching, I finally reached a conclusion. But that’s a story for another day, gotta keep you guys in suspense, right? Anyway, it was a fun trip down memory lane, and it made me appreciate both Heathcliff and Garfield in a new way. It’s like, they’re both cool in their own right, even if one is a bit more famous than the other. I get what I want, but it’s not the end. If anyone is a hardcore fan of them, be sure to check it out.
