Okay, so I’ve been thinking about getting a dog for a while, and I’ve always loved Golden Retrievers. They’re just so fluffy and friendly! But, I also live in a smaller space, and I worry about a big dog having enough room to roam around. Then I stumbled upon the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel – those big, soulful eyes! Adorable! But they can be a bit… delicate, maybe? That’s when I found out about the “Golden Cavalier” mix – the best of both worlds, supposedly!
Mixing it Up
So, I started digging. I wanted to see what this mix was really like. Not just the cute puppy pictures, but the real deal. I looked at a bunch of owner forums and groups. What I realized is that you gotta be prepared for anything.

First of all the size. You never what will come. Will it take like a Golden, or stay smaller like a Cavalier? There’s a lot of variation, even within the same litter, I found.
- Some folks ended up with dogs that were closer to 50-60 pounds.
- Others had little guys staying under 30 pounds.
I needed a dog that would be more on the Medium size.
Getting Ready
I prepped my place. Got a crate, some toys (lots of chew toys, everyone said they love to chew!), a comfy bed, and, of course, food and water bowls. I even puppy-proofed, moving some breakable stuff and putting up baby gates. It felt like preparing for a baby, honestly!
The Search Begins
I started contacting breeders. Let me tell you, it’s tricky! There are a lot of people advertising these mixes, and it’s hard to know who’s really reputable. Some people recommended rescue groups or adoption centers.
- Look for breeders who do health testing.
- Ask about the parents’ temperaments.
In the end, I found someone after a couple of months of searching.
Bringing Home the Pup
Finally, I found a breeder I felt good about. They had a litter, and I got to meet the parents – a gorgeous Golden Retriever mom and a sweet Cavalier dad. The puppies were a whirlwind of fluff and energy! I picked out a little girl with the sweetest face and the biggest paws I’d ever seen. I named her Goldie.
The first few weeks were…intense. Potty training was a challenge. I have to clean a lot. There were accidents, of course, and a few sleepless nights. But, slowly but surely, she started to get it. We went to puppy classes, which helped a ton with socialization and basic commands. She’s a smart cookie, that’s for sure!

Life with Goldie
Now, Goldie is a few years old. And my gosh, she’s about 40 pounds – right in that medium range I was hoping for. She’s got the Golden Retriever’s love of fetching and playing, but also the Cavalier’s cuddly side. She’s happy to curl up on the couch with me after a long walk. She’s the best of both worlds, just like I hoped!
It wasn’t always easy, but it was definitely worth it. If you’re thinking about a Golden Cavalier, just be prepared for anything, do your research, and get ready for a whole lot of love (and maybe a little bit of chaos!).
