So, we brought our Rottweiler pup home a few months back. Tiny little thing then, well, not that tiny for a Rottie I guess. Right away, I knew keeping an eye on his growth was gonna be important. You hear all sorts of things about big breeds and making sure they grow right, not too fast, not too slow.
Didn’t want him getting too chunky or being underweight, you know? Especially with those joints on a big dog. So, I decided I’d track his weight pretty regularly. Seemed like the practical thing to do.

First thing was figuring out how to actually weigh him. He wasn’t exactly gonna sit still on the bathroom scale like a cat might. Tried holding him at first, stepping on the scale myself, then stepping on with him, and doing the subtraction. That got tricky fast as he got heavier and wigglier. Felt kinda inaccurate too.
Ended up getting one of those larger digital pet scales online. Wasn’t the cheapest thing, but figured with a Rottweiler, it’d get used for a while and be more accurate. Way easier than the bathroom scale rodeo.
My Weigh-In Routine
Okay, so the routine started pretty much straight away. I aimed for once a week, usually Sunday morning before things got busy. I’d put the scale in the kitchen, same spot every time.
Getting him on it was a little bit of a game at first. Lots of sniffing, pawing at it. I used a couple of his kibble pieces to coax him on and get him to stand still, even just for a few seconds. Long enough to get the number locked in on the display.
I just kept a simple log in a beat-up notebook I keep in the kitchen drawer. Nothing fancy. Just wrote down the date and the weight in pounds. Sometimes I’d add a quick note if his appetite seemed different or if he had a growth spurt where he looked all leggy.
Hitting 5 Months
Now, we just passed the 5-month mark recently. It feels like a key point, you know? He’s really starting to look less like a little puppy and more like a young dog. Checking my notes:
- When we first started logging consistently around 3 months, he was roughly 32 pounds.
- By 4 months, he’d jumped up quite a bit, hitting about 46 pounds.
- And just last week, right at 5 months old, the scale read 59 pounds.
That felt about right. He’s solid, full of energy. You can see the muscle starting to build under that puppy fluff. He definitely had a big growth spurt between month 4 and 5.

What I’ve Seen
Doing this simple weigh-in has been pretty useful. It’s not about hitting exact numbers I found online, because every dog grows differently. It was more about seeing a steady, consistent gain. Making sure he wasn’t stalling or suddenly ballooning up.
It gives me peace of mind, knowing his growth is on a good track. We feed him good food, make sure he gets the right exercise, not too much forced running yet. The vet check-ups have all been positive too, confirming he’s developing well. So yeah, the scale and the notebook have just been my simple tools to keep tabs on things myself. Still weighing him weekly, it’s just part of taking care of the big guy.
