Alright, so I was looking into breeds similar to German Shepherds the other day. You know, because I love the look of GSDs, but I was curious about other options out there. I started by just hitting up Google and typing in something like “German Shepherd look-alikes” or “dogs similar to German Shepherds”.
First I came across some info about the Belgian Tervuren. Apparently, these guys look quite a bit like German Shepherds but are supposed to be a bit more chill. I read that they’re not as likely to get all worked up around other animals, which is kind of nice.

Then I dug a bit deeper and found another breed called the Belgian Sheepdog. Same deal as the Tervuren, it seems – similar looks to a GSD but with a more laid-back personality. They’re described as having a “gentler disposition,” which sounds pretty good to me.
I also stumbled upon something called a Shiloh Shepherd. I guess they are kind of like a German Shepherd mix, and they’re supposed to be pretty gentle giants. They are big, fluffy and easygoing, according to what I read.

- Belgian Sheepdog
- Shiloh Shepherd
I went down a bit of a rabbit hole and found out about King Shepherds, too. Apparently, they’re related to GSDs but are way bigger and have longer fur. Not exactly what I was looking for, but still interesting to learn about!
A little different breed
Oh, and I also read about Dutch Shepherds. These dogs seem to be pretty athletic and smart. I got the impression that they’re a bit more independent than German Shepherds. They looked cool and might be good for someone who wants a dog that’s always on the go.
So yeah, that’s what I found out about dogs similar to German Shepherds. It was a fun little research session, and it’s cool to know there are other options out there besides just GSDs.
