My dog, that big fella, you know, the one that looks like a wolf but ain’t, he’s been breathin’ real fast lately. Like, too fast. Makes me worry, you know? He’s just lyin’ there, not doin’ nothin’, and his chest is goin’ up and down like he ran a mile. Makes an old woman like me wonder if somethin’s wrong.

I heard dogs, they breathe fast sometimes when they’re hot. But it ain’t hot in the house. We got that air thingy on, keeps it nice and cool. So it can’t be that, can it? And he’s got water, fresh water, I make sure of it. Always fillin’ his bowl, so he ain’t thirsty. So it ain’t that neither.
Then I thought, maybe he’s scared? Sometimes, those loud noises from outside, they scare him. But there ain’t no noises now. It’s quiet. He’s just layin’ there, breathin’ fast. Makes me sad, seein’ him like that. He usually runs around, playin’ with his ball, barkin’ at squirrels. Now he’s just lyin’ there, breathin’ like he can’t catch his breath.
Maybe he’s sick? I don’t know much about dog sicknesses. Never had to deal with it before. He always been healthy. Eats good, plays good. Now this.
- Is he in pain?
- Did he eat somethin’ bad?
- Is it somethin’ serious?
I try to look at him, see if I can tell. But he just looks at me with those big brown eyes. He can’t tell me what’s wrong. I wish he could talk, you know? Tell me what’s hurtin’, or if he’s scared, or somethin’.
I called my grandson, the one who knows about computers and stuff. Told him about the dog breathin’ fast. He looked somethin’ up on that internet thingy. Said it could be a lot of things. Said maybe I should take him to the vet, just to be sure.
Vets cost money, though. Lot of money. And I ain’t got much. But if he’s sick, I gotta do somethin’. Can’t just let him suffer. He’s like family, you know? Been with me for years. Always there, waggin’ his tail, lickin’ my hand.
So, I guess I’ll call the vet tomorrow. Hope it ain’t nothin’ serious. Hope it’s just somethin’ simple, somethin’ they can fix easy. Don’t want my dog to be hurtin’. Don’t want him to be scared.
Maybe I’ll just sit here with him tonight. Keep an eye on him. Make sure he’s okay. Maybe he just needs someone to be there, you know? Dogs are like that, they need company. They need love.
He’s still breathin’ fast, but maybe it’s a little slower now. Or maybe I’m just hopin’ it is. I don’t know. Just gotta wait and see what the vet says tomorrow. Just gotta pray he’s gonna be alright.
Breathing fast, it ain’t natural. Not for a big dog like him. He’s strong, he’s healthy. Or he was. Makes me feel old, seein’ him like this. Makes me worry. Guess that’s what happens when you get old, you worry about everything. Especially the ones you love.

Just hope he’s gonna be okay. Just hope the vet can fix him. He’s a good dog. The best dog. He deserves to be happy and healthy.
