Okay, so, today I want to talk about something that’s been a big part of my life lately – the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, or as we cool kids call them, “Tollers.” I’ve always been a dog person, but these guys are something else.
First off, I did some digging around, you know, just to learn more about them. Turns out, they’ve been around for about 200 years, originating from, you guessed it, Nova Scotia in Canada. They used to be called Yarmouth Tollers, which is kind of a mouthful, but it’s from the county where they were first bred.

Getting into the Action
I decided I had to see these dogs in action. I mean, they’re retrievers, so fetching is in their blood, right? I took a trip to a local park where some Toller owners hang out. Watching them play fetch, especially near the water, was awesome. Their energy is just infectious.
- They’re super active. We’re talking at least an hour of exercise every day. Brisk walks, jogging, swimming – you name it, they’re up for it.
- They love to play. Seriously, throw a stick or a ball, especially near water, and they’re in heaven.
- They’re not just about physical exercise, though. These dogs are smart cookies. They need mental stimulation too, or they get bored, and you know what they say about idle paws…
Here’s what I noticed:
Training Adventures
After seeing them in the park, I was hooked. I started volunteering at a local dog training center that specializes in Tollers. It’s been a wild ride. Training these guys is a mix of fun and, well, more fun, but it’s also serious business. They’re eager to please, which is great, but you’ve got to be consistent and patient.
I’ve been helping with basic obedience training and even some agility courses. They’re surprisingly agile for their size, which, by the way, is smaller than other retriever breeds. But don’t let that fool you, they’re little powerhouses.
Joining the Community
Through all of this, I’ve met some amazing people. The Toller community is tight-knit and super welcoming. We share tips, stories, and, of course, pictures of our furry friends. I’ve learned so much from them, not just about Tollers, but about being a better dog owner in general.

Wrapping Up
So, that’s my journey into the world of Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers so far. It’s been a blast, and I’m excited to see where it goes from here. If you’re looking for an active, intelligent, and fun-loving dog, a Toller might just be the perfect fit. Just be ready to keep up with them!
Stay tuned for more adventures, folks. I’ve got a feeling this is just the beginning.
