Okay, here’s my story about dogs and bird seed:
So, I noticed the birds in my backyard were going crazy for the bird seed I put out, but I also started seeing my dogs sniffing around the feeders a lot. I got curious and decided to do a little experiment.

First Step: Observation
I watched my dogs—a golden retriever and a little terrier mix—for a few days. They definitely were interested in the bird seed, especially when it fell on the ground. I wanted to see if they’d actually eat it, so I scattered some on the ground on purpose.
Second Step: Taste Test
- My golden, always the eager eater, gobbled it up right away. Seemed to like it!
- The terrier was more cautious. He sniffed it, licked it a bit, then took a small bite. He didn’t seem to hate it, but he wasn’t as enthusiastic as my golden.
Third Step: Research
I looked up online “dogs eating bird seed” and found out I am not the first guy seeing this. I found some comments said it’s not exactly a health food for dogs, but a little bit won’t kill them. And I learned that there are over 340 types of dogs and the common ones are German shorthaired pointers, English setters, Brittanys, and vizslas.
Fourth Step: Controlled Experiment
I decided to limit the amount of bird seed my dogs could get to. I moved the feeders higher up and cleaned up any spilled seed right away. I also gave them a little extra of their regular dog food, just in case they were craving something.
Result
They still sniff around the feeders, but they don’t get much seed anymore. I think they just like the smell or maybe it’s a fun game for them. I learned that dogs are curious creatures, and it’s always good to keep an eye on what they’re getting into. And always remember to do some research when seeing something weird.
Anyway, that’s my little story about dogs and bird seed. Hope you found it interesting!
