Okay, here’s my blog post about making dog toys with rope, written in a casual, personal style:
So, I’ve got this super energetic Labrador, Max. The guy can chew through anything! Store-bought toys? Gone in minutes. I swear, he thinks they’re snacks. I needed something tougher, and I’m also kinda cheap, so I decided to try making my own rope toys.

Getting Started
First, I hit up the hardware store. I didn’t want anything fancy, just plain old cotton rope. I grabbed a good length of it – figured I could always make more if this worked out. I think I got, like, 50 feet? Seemed like a lot at the time, but trust me, it goes fast.
The Knot-Tying Marathon
Next up, the fun part: tying knots. Okay, maybe not fun at first. I looked up some basic knots online – a simple overhand knot, mostly. The idea is to just make a bunch of knots close together to create a thick, chewable section.
- I started by tying a big knot at one end. This is important, gives the dog something to really grab onto.
- Then, I just kept tying more knots, one after another, making sure they were super tight. My hands were definitely feeling it after a while!
- I tried to space the knots out a little bit, leaving some “plain” rope between the knotted sections. This gives Max different textures to chew on.
The Finished Product(s)
It took a bit of time, and my fingers were a little sore, but I ended up with a couple of pretty decent-looking rope toys. They were definitely tougher than anything I could buy at the pet store. And way cheaper!
Max’s Verdict
The real test, of course, was Max. I tossed him one of the new toys, and he went nuts! He grabbed it, shook it, chewed it… He was in heaven. He’s been working on that thing for days now, and it’s still holding up. Success!
Honestly, I’m pretty stoked with how these turned out. It’s a cheap, easy way to keep my dog entertained, and I can customize the size and shape of the toys to whatever he likes. If you’ve got a chewer on your hands, I definitely recommend giving this a try!
