Okay, here’s my blog post about dealing with dog shedding, written in a casual, personal style:
Alright, so my furry buddy, Max, a golden retriever, was leaving a trail of hair EVERYWHERE. It was like living in a perpetual fur-storm. I swear, I could’ve knitted a whole new dog with the amount of hair I was sweeping up. I knew I had to do something, so I started looking into food that could help with the shedding.

The Great Food Experiment
First, I started reading up. A lot. I quickly learned it’s not about stopping shedding completely (dogs gotta shed!), but about reducing it to a manageable level. I figured out that healthy skin and coat = less shedding. Makes sense, right?
I looked at Max’s current food. To be honest, It wasn’t the greatest quality, the cheaper stuff from the grocery store, mainly corn. Probably not the best for a luscious coat.
So, the experiment began! I decided to try switching his kibble.
- Phase 1: The Research. I spent hours (seriously, hours) comparing brands and reading ingredient lists. I was looking for food with:
- High-quality protein as the first ingredient (like real chicken or fish, not “meal”).
- Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids (these are supposed to be good for skin and coat).
- No artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. That stuff just seemed unnecessary.
- A decent price! Some of those premium foods are EXPENSIVE.
After my deep dive, I settled on a brand that ticked most of the boxes. It was a salmon-based kibble with sweet potatoes and some other good-sounding stuff.
Phase 2: The Switch.
You can’t just switch a dog’s food overnight. You have to do that slowly, so it doesn’t cause any digestive issues.

- For the first week I incorporated into his old food about 25% of his food with new food.
- The next I increased from 25% to 50%.
- The following week went to 75%.
- Finally, I served him the new food at 100%
I was watching him, I wanted to make sure that he didn’t have any problems with the new food, and he seemed fine.
Phase 3: The Waiting Game (and More Vacuuming).
I knew it wouldn’t be an instant fix. I kept up the regular grooming (brushing him a few times a week, which he loves, thankfully). I also made sure he was drinking plenty of water.
Phase 4: The Results!
Okay, drumroll… It WORKED! Well, mostly. After about a month, I noticed a significant decrease in the amount of fur tumbleweeds rolling around my house. Max’s coat also looked shinier and felt softer. He still sheds, of course, he’s a dog, but it’s WAY more manageable. I’m not finding hair in my coffee anymore, which is a huge win.
So, that’s my shedding saga. Switching to a higher-quality food definitely made a difference for Max. It wasn’t a miracle cure, but it was a big improvement. If you’re battling the fur-nado, I’d say it’s worth looking into your dog’s diet. You might be surprised at the impact it can have!
