Okay, so, I saw this question online about whether cats like seaweed or not, and it got me thinking. I have a cat, Mittens, and I’m always looking for new things to try out with her. So, I decided to run a little experiment of my own and document the whole process. Here’s how it went down:
Getting the Seaweed
First things first, I had to get some seaweed. I hit up a local Asian market – they usually have a bunch of different kinds. I grabbed a pack of dried seaweed snacks. These are the ones that are like, thin sheets and come in different flavors. I picked up a plain, unflavored pack, just to keep things simple for Mittens.

Preparing for the Test
Back home, I ripped off a small piece of the seaweed. It was pretty brittle and flaky. I put it on a clean plate. I also put some of her regular food on another plate to compare the reaction, and also some of her favorite treats on a third plate, so we had a fair experiment.
Introducing the Seaweed
I put the seaweed plate down in front of Mittens. She sniffed it with that typical cat-like suspicion, kind of like how they sniff everything you put in front of them. She gave it a couple of good sniffs, then she sort of backed away a bit. Not exactly a ringing endorsement.
The First Attempt
- Sniffing: Lots of sniffing, but no eating.
- Licking: She gave it one tiny lick, but that was it.
- Reaction: Seemed pretty indifferent, maybe even a little turned off.
Trying a Different Approach
Since the plain seaweed didn’t seem to be a hit, I thought maybe I should try a different tactic. I took the rest of the seaweed and crumbled it up into tiny pieces – almost like a powder. I then mixed a pinch of it into her regular wet food, thinking maybe the familiar smell would make it more appealing.
The Second Attempt
- Mixing: Crumbled the seaweed into her wet food.
- Observation: She ate her food, but it was hard to tell if she noticed the seaweed or not.
- Behavior: No weird reactions, so that’s good, I guess.
The Control Group
Just to make sure I was being thorough, I also put down a plate of her regular treats. As expected, she gobbled those right up. She’s a sucker for those chicken-flavored ones. Then when it comes to the food she normally eats she also went for it. So the issue is the seaweed.
The Verdict
So, after all this, what’s the conclusion? Well, based on my little experiment with Mittens, I’d say cats aren’t exactly huge fans of seaweed. At least, mine isn’t. She showed some curiosity, but that’s about it. She definitely prefers her usual food and treats. I mean, she didn’t hate it enough to run away, but she didn’t love it either. It’s safe to say that seaweed won’t be a regular on her menu.
Final Thoughts
It was a fun little experiment, though. I love trying out new things with Mittens, even if they don’t always work out. It’s all part of being a cat owner, right? You gotta keep things interesting. And hey, at least now I know that I won’t be sharing my seaweed snacks with her anytime soon!
Maybe your cat will be different, who knows? Every cat’s got its own personality and preferences. If you decide to try it out, let me know how it goes. It is fun after all!
