Okay, so it’s getting close to Christmas, and I wanted to make something special for my furry friend, Max. I’ve seen those fancy pet toys in stores, but they’re kinda pricey. Plus, I figured it’d be more fun to make something myself! So, I decided to create some DIY Christmas pet toys.
Gathering Supplies
First things first, I needed to figure out what I was gonna use. I didn’t want to buy anything special, just use stuff I already had around the house. Here’s what I scrounged up:

- Old T-shirts: I had a couple of old, worn-out t-shirts that were perfect. Nice and soft, but sturdy enough to take a beating.
- Fleece scraps: Leftover from a blanket project, these would add some extra fluff and texture.
- Squeakers: Salvaged from some of Max’s old, destroyed toys. He LOVES squeaky toys!
- Scissors: Obviously.
- Needle and thread: For sewing everything together. I’m no expert, but I can manage a basic stitch.
- Catnip:If make toy for cat, can add some catnip inside.
Making the Toys
I had a couple of ideas in mind, so I decided to make two different toys.
The Braided T-Shirt Rope
This one was super simple. I took one of the old t-shirts and:
- Cut the t-shirt into long strips: about 2-3 inches wide. Didn’t have to be perfect.
- Braided the strips together: Just like braiding hair. I made sure to pull it tight so it wouldn’t unravel easily.
- Tied knots at both ends: Big, fat knots to keep the braid from coming undone.
That’s it! A super durable, tug-of-war ready rope toy. Max loves to chew, so this was perfect.
The Fleece Squeaky Toy
This one took a bit more effort, but it was still pretty easy.
- Cut out two fleece shapes:I went with simple *, nothing fancy.
- Sewed the shapes together:Most of the way around, leaving a small opening. I used a simple running stitch.
- Stuffed the toy:With some more fleece scraps and, of course, the squeaker! I made sure to put the squeaker right in the middle.
- Sewed the opening closed: Made extra sure this was secure so Max couldn’t rip it open and get to the squeaker.
The Final Result!
And that’s all it took! Two brand-new (well, made from old stuff) Christmas toys for Max. He went absolutely nuts for them! The rope toy is his go-to for a good chew session, and he carries the squeaky bone around * warmed my heart, you know? Seeing him so happy with something I made with my own two hands. It was definitely worth the little bit of time and effort. Plus, I saved some money and repurposed some old materials. Win-win!
I’m already thinking about what I can make next. Maybe a little stuffed Santa? Or a Christmas tree-shaped chew toy? The possibilities are endless!
