Okay, so I’ve been dreaming of getting a Maine Coon kitten for, like, forever. They’re just so fluffy and majestic! So, I finally decided to take the plunge and start looking for a reputable cattery. The whole process was a bit of a learning curve, so I figured I’d share my experience.
Finding Potential Catteries
First, I started with a simple search. I just typed in “cuddly maine coon cattery” and see what would pop up. I got a ton of results, so many it was kind of overwhelming!
I knew I needed to narrow things down. I wanted a cattery that really prioritized the health and well-being of their cats. I mean, that’s the most important thing, right?
Digging Deeper
So, I started visiting some of cattery websites. Some websites looked super professional. Others look totally sketch and that’s totally a red flag. I instantly wrote off to next one.
What I was looking for:
- Clear photos: I wanted to see lots of pictures of the kittens and their parents. If a website only had, like, one blurry photo, that was a no-go.
- Health information: Did the cattery talk about genetic testing? Did they mention anything about vaccinations and vet care? If they didn’t, I moved on.
- Contact Information: I want to be able to contact to them, better with phone number, email, and physical address.
Making Contact
After I found a few catteries that seemed promising, I started sending out emails. I asked a bunch of questions, like:
- How long have you been breeding Maine Coons?
- Can you tell me about the parents’ personalities?
- What kind of socialization do the kittens get?
- Do you have any upcoming litters?
- Can I see your contract?
Some breeders were super responsive and friendly, answering all my questions thoroughly. Others…not so much. Some of them even not reponse me at all. Guess who I didn’t go with?
Visiting (or Virtual Visiting)
Ideally, it would visit the cattery in person. I know some would do video calls, which is the next best thing.
Making a Decision
I’ve been still in process of selecting my favorite one. And waiting to visit the cattery. I’m sure after a while, I can bring my furry giant at home. It worth all the hard work.
