Okay, so I’ve got a Chow Chow, and let me tell you, finding the right food for these fluffy guys can be a real pain. Their coats are so thick, and they can be a bit picky, so I really wanted to find the best possible food for my buddy.
My Chow Chow Food Journey
I started by, you know, just grabbing whatever looked decent at the pet store. Big mistake! My Chow Chow started having some, uh, digestive issues, and his beautiful coat started looking dull. Not good.

So, I went into research mode. I spent hours reading articles, forum posts, and everything else I could find. I learned that Chows need a good balance of protein, fat, and some specific nutrients to keep their skin and coat healthy. I also discovered that they might do better with limited ingredient diets to avoid any allergies, because my furry pal did scratch himself a bit.
Narrowing Down the Choices
Here’s what I looked for specifically:
- Good Quality Protein: I didn’t want anything with a bunch of by-products or mystery meat. Real meat, like chicken, lamb, or fish, was the goal.
- Healthy Fats: Things like fish oil or flaxseed, because those are supposed to be good for their coats.
- Limited Ingredients: The fewer ingredients, the better, I figured. Less chance of something upsetting my Chow’s tummy.
- No Artificial Junk: No weird colors, flavors, or preservatives. Just good, wholesome food.
The Experiment
I picked out three different foods that seemed to fit the bill.
I tried each one, and see how it went. During each trial, I kept a close eye on his poops (yup, glamorous, I know!), his energy levels, and the condition of his coat.
The Winner!
After the three trials, my winner is the lamb and brown rice recipe! It’s got good quality protein, healthy fats, and it’s relatively limited in ingredients.

My Chow Chow has been on the new food for a few months now, and the difference is HUGE. His coat is super fluffy and shiny, he’s got tons of energy, and, most importantly, his tummy troubles are gone! It was a bit of a journey, but finding the right food made all the difference for my furry friend.
