Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this “advanced pet food” thing lately, and let me tell you, it’s been a bit of a journey. I wanted to share what I’ve been up to, in case anyone else is thinking of diving in.
Getting Started
First, I had to figure out what “advanced” even means. For me, it wasn’t just about fancy packaging or a higher price tag. I wanted something that was actually better for my dog, Max, something tailored to his specific needs.

I started by doing a whole bunch of reading. Looking up what nutrition stuff dogs need and such. It’s kinda head spinning with all information, I won’t lie.
The Experiment Begins
Armed with my newfound, very basic knowledge, I decided to ditch the old kibble. It felt like I was feeding Max cardboard, to be honest. I started looking at fresh food options.
- First Attempt: Went with a pre-made, subscription-based fresh food. Super convenient, but wow, the price! Max loved it, though. His coat got shinier, and he seemed to have more energy.
- Second Attempt: Decided to try making my own. Found some recipes online, bought a ton of ingredients (chicken, veggies, rice…the works). It was…a lot. Took up a whole Sunday afternoon, and my kitchen was a disaster.
- Third Attempt: Kinda split the difference. Found some “human-grade” ingredients that were already cooked and portioned. Mixed those with a high-quality kibble to boost the protein and add some crunch. This seems to be working the best so far. Cheaper, takes less time, and I can keep my kitchen not so destroyed.
The Results (So Far)
It’s been a few weeks of this whole “advanced pet food” thing, and honestly, I’m seeing a difference. Max is definitely more excited about meal times. He’s always been a bit of a picky eater, but now he scarfs everything down. And, yeah, his poop is…better. Less smelly, more solid. Sorry if that’s TMI, but it’s a real thing!
It’s still a work in progress, I guess. I want to add some fish oil and try to figure out how to get the right balance, to make my dog’s food a bit healthier. I’m no expert, but it feels good to be putting in the effort. It is all a bit of hit and miss, and I’m still figuring things out as I go.
If anyone has some ideas or things that worked for them, let me know! It’s all about giving our furry friends the best, right?
