Alright, so you wanna build somethin’ for them cats, huh? A cattery, they call it. Fancy name for a cat house, if you ask me. I’ve seen a few cats in my day, and they ain’t too picky, but they do like a comfy spot.
First off, you gotta think about where you’re gonna put this thing. Inside or outside? If it’s outside, make sure it’s sturdy. Don’t want no wind blowin’ it over and scatterin’ them cats all over the place. Use good, strong wood, ya know? Not that flimsy stuff that cracks when you sneeze on it.

- Strong wood is a must, just like for a good ol’ fence.
- Gotta make sure it’s safe from other critters, too. Dogs, raccoons, you name it. They like to bother cats, them rascals.
Now, if it’s inside, you got more options. You can make it fancy or keep it simple. But remember, cats like to climb. They like to look down on us, the little stinkers. So, give ’em somethin’ to climb on. Shelves are good, those tall cat tree things work too. My niece, she got one of them fancy cat trees. Cats love it, climbin’ all over it like it’s a real tree.
Think about cleanin’ too. Cats, well, they ain’t the cleanest animals. Gotta make it easy to scoop out the poop and wipe down the pee. Smooth surfaces are your friend. Nothin’ too rough, ’cause that stuff just holds onto the stink.
And don’t forget about the sun. Cats like to bask in the sun. A window is a good idea, if you can swing it. Let ’em get some of that good sunshine. It’s good for their bones, just like it’s good for ours. My old bones sure do love a bit of sun.
Now, some folks like to get real fancy with their catteries. They add little toys and scratchin’ posts and all sorts of stuff. That’s fine and dandy, if you got the money and the time. But honestly, cats ain’t that complicated. A warm bed, some food and water, and a place to do their business, that’s all they really need. Don’t go breakin’ the bank, unless you really want to, of course.
I saw this one cattery, looked like a little castle. Had little towers and bridges and everything. Pretty fancy, huh? But my cats, they were just as happy with a cardboard box and an old blanket. Goes to show ya, cats ain’t got no sense of style. As long as they’re comfy.
And another thing, if you are gonna have more than one cat in this thing, make sure they got enough space. Cats ain’t always friendly with each other. They need their own space sometimes. Give ’em separate sleepin’ areas, separate eatin’ areas. That’ll keep the peace, you know. Less fightin’, less yowlin’ at all hours of the night.
Oh, and make sure it’s safe. No sharp edges, no little bits they can choke on. Cats are curious, they like to chew on things. Keep it simple and keep it safe. That’s my motto for most things in life, not just catteries.

So, there you have it. Some ideas for your cattery. Don’t overthink it too much. Cats, they ain’t as fussy as people think. Just give ’em a safe, comfy place, and they’ll be happy as clams. And if they ain’t happy, well, they’ll let ya know. Cats are good at lettin’ ya know what they want. Just like my husband used to be, bless his heart.
Remember, sturdy, safe, and easy to clean. That’s all you really need to worry about. And maybe a little sunshine, if you can manage it. Your cats will thank you for it, even if they don’t say it out loud. They show their appreciation in other ways, like purrin’ and rubbin’ up against your legs. That’s their way of sayin’ “thanks”.
And last but not least, make sure you enjoy the process. Building something for your pets can be a real joy. It’s a way of showin’ them you care. And that’s what it’s all about, ain’t it? Caring for them little creatures who bring so much joy to our lives.
