I saw something online about whether or not dogs can eat soybean oil. So I thought, why not try it out myself? I got a bottle of soybean oil from the store, the regular kind you use for cooking. I mean, it’s just oil made from soybeans, right? How bad could it be?

First Try

The first time, I just poured a little bit of the soybean oil over my dog’s regular food. He seemed to like it just fine. He wolfed it down like he always does, no problem.

More Oil

Since he ate it the first time, I tried giving him a little more the next day. I mixed about a tablespoon of soybean oil into his food. He still ate it all up, no complaints. He seemed to have a bit more energy than usual, running around the yard like crazy.

Too Much Oil?

I got a little carried away and added even more oil to his food the following day. This time, I put in like, two big spoonfuls. I thought, “More oil, more energy, right?” Boy, was I wrong.

  • Upset Stomach: My poor dog ended up with a really upset stomach. He was throwing up and had diarrhea. I felt terrible.
  • Vet Visit: I rushed him to the vet, worried sick. The vet asked me a bunch of questions about what my dog had eaten. When I mentioned the soybean oil, the vet said it was okay in small amounts but I gave him way too much.
  • Lesson Learned: The vet gave my dog some medicine to settle his stomach and told me to stick to his regular food for a few days. I learned my lesson: just because something is okay for dogs doesn’t mean more is better.

Back to Normal

After a couple of days of bland food and the vet’s medicine, my dog was back to his old self. I felt so relieved. I’m definitely not going to give him that much soybean oil again!

Small Amounts

Now, I only give him a tiny bit of soybean oil every now and then, like a few drops. He seems to enjoy it, and it doesn’t upset his stomach this way. I’m just glad he’s okay now. And from what I saw online before, it says “It is rich in healthy fats that can benefit their overall health and provide essential nutrients”. I guess that is true if it is in small portion.

Final Thoughts

So, can dogs have soybean oil? Yeah, they can, but only a little bit. Don’t make the same mistake I did and give them too much. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to our furry friends, don’t you think? Next time, I’ll for sure check with the vet first before I try giving my dog anything new.
